Remington 11-48 Feed Issue SOLVED Well Kinda

I have an 11-48 on the bench.

When empty, the carrier latch appears to function normally, however once there is a shell in the magazine the shell presses on the latch with enough force to prevent the latch from moving and hence it won't feed.

What am I missing?

It is the carrier latch spring. I guess it has weakened over time. I'm going to anneal it, reshape it and re-harden it today.

Thanks for the heads up on the charging handle.

The spring was cracked. How it held together is beyond me.

Ordered a new one from Western Gun Parts and another charging handle on spec.

You are missing a shotgun... that old relic has been obsolete for 50 years...

I know the friction tube and friction pieces need to be lubricated for free movement or it won't feed reliably...
 
Hey Charles~if I had it in front of me I could compare it to my 12ga., 11-48. I've had this gun forever (inherited from my grandfather) and have owned 2 others, a 28ga. and a 20ga. All functioned perfectly. I also have a spare FC barrel for my gun...and am looking for a new buttstock. Mine was shortened by my small-stature grandfather who bought it new, I'm about a foot and a half taller than he was.

Anyhow~contributes nothing to your situation, but hard to tell anything from that description. I might add...they're a bit daunting to take apart fully for a good cleaning~everything good there? Lots of moving parts have to come together on those old recoil-operated guns, and a firm hold to the shoulder too I might add. Without it, the thing won't cycle.
 
I've got one and hunt ducks with it (I opened the choke), well when I have time anyway, and also skeet; I have that problem usually after it's sat for a couple months. After a few shots it seems to start working, could point to Guntech's suggestion on the friction tubes.

BUT once you do get it running, keep a close eye on your charging handle even when they feel very tight they can fly out at bad times. Was a known problem with these. 1100 charging handles work. A few occasions, I've tried a few things to tighten the fit; and I've shot a couple hundred rounds without it budging - then suddenly it's gone and you're spending time looking for it.

This is a good point. I've yet to lose mine but when I took up crow-hunting semi-seriously a few years back, I was worried about how loose a fit the charging handle was. Partly from an inconvenience POV, but also a safety one. Should the thing fly out when cycling, you could end-up with a chambered shell and no easy/safe way to clear it if you weren't going to take the shot...or...didn't like leaving a chambered round/safety-on. (which I don't) I bought an 1100 "Tactical" charing handle and with a drill/files/belt sander tweaked it enough to be used in my 11-48. The 11-48 holds in place using a ball detent and I got that ALMOST perfect. :) The Tactical one fits even more loosely than the original, but I use it when hunting (better grip with gloves on) and keep the original in a ziploc bag tethered to my box of shells. Still have both.

Very fond of 11-48s, just can't seem to find a replacement buttstock! :)

Thanks for that update; I'll take a closer look at mine.
 
Well another issue, I hope someone can help with, arose when I took the carrier latch out earlier today.

A small mushroomed shaped piece of steel came out when the assembly was removed. I think it is called the carrier latch rivet.

I have no idea where or how it fits. It appeared on the bench.

Parts are on order. I'd like to get this gun working before grouse season opens next year :)
