remington 11 barrel thread

I agonized whether I should post this into the shotguns section, but I think the people who'd know the answer in the shotguns section are all here anyway... + the people who are not there ;)

So, what thread does the _old_ Remington 11 barrel use? Or does that matter? I know the barrel extension changed over time, but perhaps the actual barrel that screwed into that extension didn't?

I have the extension and want to put a _modern_ barrel in it so trying to figure out what I need and if I can just order a barrel of whatever length that's already been threaded for chokes and simply put it into the extension.

No offense, but if you want to tell me to buy a different shotgun because this way is going to be expensive, please don't, that's not relevant here :)

Your project is foolish, and an incredible waste of time and money that likely will not live up to your, or anyone else's expectations.

Having said that, with enough time and money you can make anything happen. Thread spec is irrelevant as this is a pure gunsmithing proposition. You either need a barrel blank to fully machine the profile, breech threads, and choke threads into, or you need to salvage a barrel from something else and refit it to your shotgun. This will require you to chop off the existing threads, re-thread, rechamber and reposition or simply remake the barrel ring that interfaces with the magazine tube. This is a lot of work, that requires a lot of expensive equipment and specific tools.

I don't know what you plan on gaining as the gun can only handle 2-3/4 shells anyways, and if you want chokes you could simply have the barrel threaded and have chokes installed. trying to add a "modern barrel" won't solve anything other than the burning hole in your wallet.

2 3/4 chambered modern barrels are available. What I'm hoping to gain is not having to do all that machining (I'm aware of all that is required) by buying a barrel with appropriate thread and screwing it into the extension. I'm also hoping to find out what that thread is without unscrewing the old barrel so that I can check if it's even possible to find a suitable replacement.

You don't understand that you're looking for a product that doesn't exist and lies solely in the realm of custom manufacture. You're not going to find another barrel that works unless you source another Remington Model 11 Barrel, but I can't see how that will solve anything. You haven't explained what installing a "modern barrel" is supposed to achieve, or even what a modern barrel is.
 
OK, you want to rebarrel your Model 11 with a modern barrel that is threaded for choke tubes.
I suspect that the only barrel that would screw into a M11 barrel extension is a M11 barrel.
It would be just as easy to locate a complete barrel assembly, insure that it fits and functions in your gun, and then have it altered to accept choke tubes.
There is also the issue of the ring on the bottom of the barrel that engages the magazine tube. Installing one on a replacement barrel would be yet another complication.
 
Rem 11 barrels don't really have much thickness for a screw in choke.

Manufacturing a barrel from scratch is daunting specifically because of that ring on the bottom.

Example: Browning a5 uses a _very_ similar barrel extension. All dimensions are the same, except for one little prong (not too sure of the name). Could the threading be the same? Unscrew barrel from the extension, screw into Rem 11 extension, milling the front of it so the ring lines up, mill back of barrel if necessary and ream the chamber.

But I need to know what thread either one uses.

What about the new rem 11 barrels (again extension was changed, but is the thread the same?)

If there is nothing out there with the same thread then this idea can be laid to rest... Well is there? What's the thread?
 
There is another option, apart from installing an external adjustable choke, like a Poly-Choke.
Brownells sells an adapter sleeve that is installed at the muzzle. The muzzle is turned to the appropriate external diameter, and then the sleeve is sweated on. It is threaded internally to accept thinwall choke tubes. I've installed a couple of these, and the system works. The adapter sleeve is rather small in diameter, and avoids the bulbous appearance of old style adjustable chokes.
The barrel would be shortened enough to remove the existing choke before installing the sleeve.

Can't be any thinner than the Belgian barrels. I had thin walls installed into my A5 barrel.

I know :) Also Savage and Fox shotguns (and their extensions are identical to Rem).
