I recently acquired a used, but looks like new, Remington 1100 LW in 28g. Broke 2 extractors already. The last one only made it thru 226 shots before giving up.

Is there something to look for that is causing these to break. Have not seen anything obvious.

I did see one report on Shotgun World that this is a problem on the 28g version.

Anyone have a similar experience.

Make sure the chamber is really clean so there is minimum drag when the fired shell is ejected to minimize pressure on the extractor. In my skeet days I fired many thousands of shells through my M1100 28 ga without an issue but I knew others who experienced your problem. If you are shooting reloads, be certain they are fully resized. Rem 1100 in 28 ga had a habit of ejecting empties more strongly (throwing them further) than any other gauge of the 1100's when shooting target loads so they seemed more violent when they cycled so more stress on parts like the extractor.

I had something similar on a late 70's 12 ga trap gun about 20 years ago. I bought the gun used in 1994. I replaced the extractor in '97 at 4000 rounds, in '00 at 4300 rounds, in '01 at 2500 rounds, & again in '01 at 1800 rounds. When I sold it in '13, it was at 25000 rounds. So far as I know, I didn't do anything different during the time they were breaking or during the time they weren't.

All shells were Remington reloads, RXP's, Premiers, & Gun Clubs resized on a MEC case conditioner & reloaded on a MEC 650. Loads were 1 oz. at 1200 to 1250 fps.

Bob.

My 1100 28ga's have had 1000 and 1000 of rounds through them especially the skeet models and never this issue
I don't use anything but brass based ammo in them however
What are you using
Cheers

In my opinion if the extractors are breaking, the heat treat is too brittle...

Have someone familiar with heat treating to evenly and slowly draw one out to a deep blue colour and try it... you can polish the colour away after it cools if you want it shiny.

Thanks for the suggestion and you are probably right. There is no evidence that the extractor bent even the slightest amount, it is a clean fracture. Sort of looks like what happens when you break off a hacksaw blade or some other hardened material.
