Remington 1100 Extractor

Anyone happen to know if there is a Canadian source for Remington 1100 extractors. I need one for my 28g but also have a friend that needs one for a 12g. These things break regularly so you would expect someone would be selling them.
WGP does not have any.
 
I don't know why they would break regularly ... in 50 years of smithing I am sure I didn't sell more than one or two every couple of years ... the old 1100 was a pretty reliable gun. I always sourced WGP.

If they are breaking I would suggest drawing one to a deep purple colour and try it... that should take some of the brittleness out.

There is a You Tube video that explains that the extractors were made by a MIM process which inherently leaves them brittle. I have no idea if this is fact or rumor. I have also seen numerous posts on various forums that anyone who shot an 1100 normally showed up at the range with a box of spare parts so I am not sure it was a reliable gun.

I do like my 1100 but rarely shoot it because of the extractor issue. Mostly I use it when we have youngsters out shooting for the first time.

About 3 years ago I bought all of the 28 extractors that WGP had. Some didnt even last through 1 box of ammo. I did post on CGN and you had advised at that time about heating to a purple color which I did. That was a big help and that extractor lasted maybe 200 rounds but I am down to my last one now. If I break that, the gun is basically for parts only which is too bad since it still looks like new.

There was also a suggestion to make sure the notch in the barrel which the extractor fits into needs to be clean. Any junk in there may cause the extractor to break. Checked that, it is clean.

Cut a 20ga extractor to fit.

Yes,OEM Rem shotgun extractors are a sintered/MIM'd part.

Rem offered replacement tool steel extractors also.
 
If these new extractors are such a problem, I would take a new extractor and make a copy of it using oil hardening tool steel, harden it, draw it to deep purple... they are just a shaped flat piece aren't they? It's been a long time.

That is why I am saving the last 28g extractor I have. Now I just need to find the time to do it.
 
With large frame(12&16ga) & small frame (20ga-410) extractors stacked on top of one another, modifying a 20ga extractor to fit/function in a 410 bolt would take 5minutes.

Sorry,I do NOT have any 28ga extractors to compare.

I grind a .020" flat...aka cold chisel tip into the extractor tip so it is not sharp...aka a wood chisel to prevent the tip from chipping/breaking.

Rem 12,16,20,410 870's,1100's,1187's w/ literally truck loads of ammo run thru each shooting trap/skeet/clays over the years w/o an extractor issue.
 
If you've got a gun that breaks extractors regularly I'd have to start asking if something is wrong with how that gun uses its extractor, or if someone is abusing it.

But real metal not MiM is the first thing to try.

The 28g Rem 1100 is overly energetic in the extraction cycle. It throws the empty hulls a long way, maybe 25-30' and I have only shot target loads. I have seen that posted on other forums as well. Maybe just too much force on the extractor for the small amount of metal that takes all of the stress. It seems they break at the same place face every time; ie- at the bolt face.
 
I wonder if the extractor is hitting the side of the extractor notch in the barrel for whatever reason. Look for wear as an indication.
So many broken extractors is quite uncommon.

throwing 28ga hulls... 25-30 ft?

When was the last time the recoil spring was changed?

Throwing hulls 25-30 feet is certainly an over gas & NOT an extractor issue.

Peen the gas holes w/a ball bearing to restrict gas flow.
