I am the new owner of a Remington 1100, which I purchased on the site, and am new to the semi auto shotgun world. I thought you could load it by simply loading the mag tube and the cocking the action but I was wrong. The action would stay to the rear! I found this odd having several semi auto rifles.

I went on line and downloaded the manual from the Remington site and was shocked to find that the first round must actually be loaded with the action to the rear and then loaded through the ejection port. Once the action is forward then the magazine tube is loaded.

I then began to cycle the action to eject the rounds but found the action would stay to the rear each time I cycled it and would have to be released forward using the carrier release? Is this normal? When fired does the gas do something special?

I will not get a chance to fire her until next weekend and want to make sure I did not buy a dud and would like to let the seller know asap if there is a problem.

any assistance is appreciated.

It is working as it should; if you really pulled back very fast on the lever all the way back it might cycle the next shell but it has to be done just about as fast as the gas-operated cycle.

It's normal.

The shell coming out of the magazine tube hits the carrier release with sufficient force, thus chambering the next round.

If you take the trigger group out, you'll see the little part that the shell hits.

I can cycle my action by hand and eject all the shells.

I don't know that I've ever tried to load the magazine only, on a closed chamber. I'll try that tonight.

i think yo're confusing a semi auto with a pump- you NEED the gas to cycle the action- the reason the action is held to the rear is so that the chamber is ready to accept the first shell and start the cycle- even on a pump, i always have loaded chamber first, then safety, then the tube- but it's a different case for riflesand pistols- those pick up the round from their magasines

A little confused by reading this.

I own an 1100. With the action fully forward, I load four into the mag, then chamber one of them and top up the mag, making 4 + 1.

I have NEVER loaded through the ejection port, unless only intending on firing 'one round now'.

AM I THE ONLY ONE WHO ACTUALLY READS THE MANUAL?- DIG OUT YOUR MANUAL, take a look under loading , and it says PULL THE BOLT TO THE REAR, drop a shell in through THE EJECTION PORT, allow the bolt to go forward- then load the tube-why they don't apply the SAFETY after ckosing the bolt, i don't know-
