I have been loading with If I remember right 6grs blue dot for around 600+ fps
it seems to shoot high which is normal about at least a foot .
here is a pic of gun also a pic of the shortened loaded 45 schofield beside a 45acp you could use 45acp cases with cast 454 bullets I just liked the rimmed better you could also shorten 45 colt cases but I didn't want to go there also a full length 45colt case will not come anywhere chambering

QM 86 87 - I believe it could be either? There are lots of remingtons in 44, but I think Remington also made a cartridge of their own in 44 called 44 remington that was short lived and not well known. I may be thinking of a 45 cartridge though.

Thanks. To convert, stay within Antique Requirements and keep Legal Techs. happy. This is getting complicated.
 
A little off topic but does anyone know where you can get extra percussion remington 1858 cylinders in canada ? Like uberti or pietta ones.

I picked up a spare original cylinder, barrel with address & early silver cone foresight, grips, lever and mainspring all for $200 on this site. All work.
It's all out there, keep lookin.
 
And mine finally arrived last week. It is in superb mechanical condition and bore is like brand new.
Shiny inside with nice and crisp rifling. I want that conversion so bad now. Question now is; Kirst or R&D?

Go to Ellwood Epps and look under the Taylor and Company listings. They make new 1858 conversions in .44/40(by far the best), .38 SP and 45LC. They go for around $600. And if your going to shooting a conversion stay authentic and shoot Black!!

It would defeat the purpose. Those cylinders would change status of your antique to restricted.
 
Very true. This is the basis of my own argument with the authorities at this time.

They are sure that my Remington conversion (pics above) is a .44-40 Restricted while I know that it is a 44/100 Antique.

.44-40 is RESTRICTED.

Can you give us more on this situation of yours?
 
There's a excellent book on doing conversions on colts, Remington's and others
called A Study of Colt Conversions and Other Percussion Revolvers

(it details revolvers converted from percussion to cartridge. Includes technical specifications,and accurate drawings plus historical information from government files, manufacturers, museums, and private collections.)

unfortunately it's several hundred dollars if you can even find a copy.
but you can also view the whole book here.
