Like Beltfed , we SR (Service Rifle) shooters go back in this discipline for decades (2 or 3 now?), and dealing with various .223 twist rates and optimum Match booolits were our passion to glean all this accuracy from our .223 tight twist rigs out to 500 m/y and beyond.
I jumped for joy when Remmy cranked out the SPS Tac with a 20” barrel and in a 9” twist. Yahoooo
The only problem is I wanted to send my 68 gr, 69 gr, and 75 grain booolits out to 900m at Connaught Ranges, Nepean/Kanata/Shirley’s Bay, ON. And that would mean any barrel longer than the Remmy factory (I’m a cheap retiree, now, but cheap teacher back then) tubes.
I was elated when I found a bunch of close out factory deals/production runs/ versions of the .223 Remmy barreled receivers with 24” and 9” twists. I had to jump on one of them for $700ish from Elwood Epps north of Orillia, ON. That was this past summer/fall of 2021.
I’m having good luck using up a pile (huge pile) of 68 grainers that I saved only for SR shooting (not CQB) out to 600 yards so I’ve been shooting them ONLY at my home range out to 100m ONLY. Once the Base Borden Ranges open up for ORA bookings, then I can get back to you all about the 68 grain fun and of course soon, the 75 grain fun .
This past Sept, I was at Operator Expo in Ottawa and bumped into Gravel Agency folks (read : Remmy 700). I had the joy of asking…. WTF: What the Fornication is going on with Remmy 700 joy ??
I explained that my clients are peeved about the barrel twist rates in the .223 because it’s no longer the 60’s and 70’s when .223 booolits ran in 14” and 12” twist tubes….Get with the program/evolution/trends and build us some tight twist .223 renditions. “Marty, We’re going BACK to the Future!” Ha ha ha ha ha
That rep was telling me that there are many irons in the fire with the new buyers and I had to chill and take a breath.
So we shall see what’s on the horizon for Remmy 700 fun and .223 barrel twist rates. Better times ahead, I’m sure!
Here’s crossing our fingers for a 7” twist barrel to launch surplus tracers.. ha ha ha ha ha. More
Peace Be The Journey!
Cheers, Barney
