I know some of you have hunted with this before so whats your opinion on it? Overpowered for deer and black bear? It seams to me that a 200grain bullet would turn deer into hamburger?

Quite the opposite. The bigger, slower, heavily constructed bullet would do little meat damage. The 350 rem mag may be a bit over powered for deer, but it would do very well. It is well known as a good black bear cartridge. I wouldn't hesitate to use one.

In the 350RemMag or it's equivalent the 35Whelen, the 200s are perfect for deer and the 250s pefect for moose and other big critters.

That's true. The original short magnum.
It's a very good black bear and moose cartridge as was noted. I have several that get hunted. Shot a small bear last fall with one using 250 Speers. It ran about 8 yards. Hit it right thru chest and there was little loss of meat.

There is only one 200gr factory load. But it can be used for all big game. But really it is a handloader's cartridge now. Then you can load it full steam with 250s or download it to 35Rem levels with 200RNs if you wish. Even 35cal pistol bullets can be used for varmints and small game. So I say VERY good and versatile. So yes perhaps a bit over powered for deer but won't damage alot of meat usually either as was said. The hyper velocity rounds tend toward larger losses of meat as a result of hydrostatic pressure and the resultant bloodshot meat- hamburger effect you mention.

been down that road a couple times ...go with the 35 Whelen..same ballistics and no cartridge OAL vs. magazine length and no bullet seating depth issues.....and use 225's for everything, the Whelen can get a 225 up over 2600.....I had one 24" Whelen that spit a 225 out at 2725......

If you've got one, I'd love to trade you for something smaller, and faster. I'd love to have one, but they aren't around every bend. I do believe, like has been said, it is a good cartridge t handload, but I think every cartridge is best when loaded by oneself. Good luck, Eric

I have my eye on a Remington Number 7 as my new hunting rifle. Very nice gun, and within my price range (well close enough anyway). I was just looking for some opinions on the .350 as I dont personally know anyone who shoots it. Any opinions on the gun itself? Its got a 22" barrel which from what I have read is not a problem with the .350. Like I said it is a very nice gun, classic look to it and felt comfortable to me.

I'll agree with Eric , the big bullets kill well and don't ruin as much meat as the smaller bores.. The 350 Rem Mag is a doozy. 150-200fps faster than the 358 Win allows for better expansion of bullets. I sold my 358 after getting the 350.

As for the problems with OAL...big time exaggerated...I have shot up to 300 Barnes O's in my Rem 660, If you want a long action the 358 Norma is the way to go. What a round!

I wrote the following article which gives an idea of what 358 bullets can do.

Ive always liked the idea of the 350 Rem Mag. A 225 gr Partition @ 2700 fps in a light handy rifle & lower power scope, sounds like perfection for an elk & moose rifle.

I've taken more than a few deer and 3 moose with the 200 gr. 35.

IMHO, better "on-game" performance than one would initially expect, with less meat damage than some of the higher velocity stuff. No need "to shoot the corners off them" ! Like the 358 Win, just one of those great cartridges that is overshadowed by the sheep-mentality of " it's gotta be a
270/308/30-'06 ... "

You don't need a 260Rem - you've never needed a 260Rem - there never was a 260rem - there are only 35s - oh yes "perfection" - a 35. Now be on your way.:D

I guess I would get along well with you and Bartell. My deer rifle always been a .264. It used to be a 6.5x55 but now I'm shooting a .260Rem. My moose rifle is a semi custom stainless Ruger .35 Whelen. I'm shooting the best in each category!:sniper::dancingbanana:

Some year I hope to shoot something other than paper with a .350 Rem Mag...........:p

It is one of those cartridges that just calls my name and I think I have had five rifles in this chambering. Right now one of my "keepers" is a Ruger 77 Mark II stainless/synthetic in .350 Rem Mag, tuned up by our very own RockChucker, and I dearly hope to see how it performs on game one of these years. :dancingbanana: I took it on my Yukon moose hunt last year, thinking it was a great trade-off for range, energy, wieght etc in a basically weatherproof package. Of course, we had bright sunshine for the entire hunt.........

My hunting load is 60 grains of H4895 and the 225 gr Nosler Partition. No idea what speed it is doing, but it is a reasonably hot load and (in my rifle) quite accurate.

Fun cartridge. :) But unfortunately I cannot personally report results on game animals.

Interesting - that's my story too. When I want a change up from my 35s I hunt a little stainless M7 in 260Rem for yotes n deer. Kills em dead. Sold my 6.5 Swede sporter for the $$$ to help buy it.
We've still got a M77 in .350 left
Never heard of that calibre - a "350 left".:D

Back in the early 70's when I had my 350 Rem,nothing ever walked away from it. I used 250's on everything and 200's when I didn't have the heavier ones, open sights was all I ever used on that rifle.
Moose, bears, deer, there was never any feeling of being over gunned,we never thought of it much.
