Remington 40-X vs. Bernard P

Sorry, I missed that you already had a 40X and a Barnard on the way....Looks like everybody else did too!:D

I would have the 40X blueprinted...The 40X is just like a box of chocolates...Never know what you are going to get.

I would have the Barnard checked....sh1t happens.

I would use the Barnard in the F-Class....'cause I like F-class more!:D

Fripp uses a boat load of 40X actions and every one of them has been accurized. If it were me, I'd have anything marked "Remington" checked to make sure it is true, custom shop or not.

This thread is a very good tutorial for me. I think it's coming to the end, and until now I drew two conclusions:
- Barnard P for F-class, 40X for Palma because of its lower weight.
- 40X may/will require accurizing and gunsmith who tells me this is not full of baloney.

Thank you kindly.

I cannot comment on those actions because I've never owned one or worked on one. I suppose it comes down to gunsmiths opinions then as to how good the tolerances and designs are in each make.

The XR-100 action is now sold under the 40X Rangemaster name. Same action, just a different name and MUCH higher selling price. Both of my XR actions needed trueing and I highly doubt any other "Custom Shop" action would be any truer than their 700 actions. Some come very true but most come needing work.

So what currently produced custom actions can you comment on?
Some earlier custom benchrest actions were less than perfect.
Right now I'm working on my 40X and it is surprisingly square. Under .001 on the receiver shoulder and the bolt is better. Lugs are contacting 100%. This one will only need a little touch up and good to go.

The custom actions like you mentioned are older ones. I did own an older Armtech and McLennan. The Mac was dead on true, but the bolt handle broke off too easy. Armtech was out .002 on the shoulder. Like I said, it's better to check and never assume because it's custom it's perfect. Just saying. Corben1 did the work on those two.

If by Palma you mean a rifle suited for DCRA or PRA fullbore target rifle competition, the difference in action weight is not an issue. Barnard, and other custom actions are far more commonly seen than Remington 40Xs in TR class rifles. Given the level of competition in F Class, the Barnard would likely be a better choice there.
