How many people have stock remington 40x single shot and 40xb repeaters for tgt shooting? How many have bought them and made tactical rifles out of them? I have wondered why no one ever says much about them.

Had a nice 40x 222 rem sorry I sold it only thing left is the New original stock

Had a couple over the years. Used parts from one of them to build my 308 "Frankenrifle" precision rig. Usually good shooters. There's a shop in Long Island (Chet's or Chester's, I forget) that deals primarily with 40x rifles, last time I was there he had about 60 or 70 up on one wall. - dan

I have owned several 40X rifles over the years, and have two at present. One is the basis for a custom HB 260AI [Krieger 1-8" SS Bull barrel] This rifle was originally a 220 Swift, and I still have that very accurate Swift barrel.
The other is a 22 rimfire. It is one of the most accurate rimfires I've owned, edged only by a Suhl I have here. I have shot 5-shot groups with the 40X rimfire at 200 meters that were under 1" using Eley Match EPS ammo. Regards, Eagleye

Here's my 1969 original barrel in 7.62 Nato. Pillar bedded, custom bolt knob, Decelerator pad an ready for DCRA F/TR shooting this year. I guess nobody talks much about them because they are mostly safe queens nowadays.

The actions are excellent. The stocks are horrible for prone shooting, and the barrels are generally better than a 700

If you are talking the new versions, I do not think the end result warrants the steep price. I am totally choked that they took the XR100 and re-badged it as a 40X at double the price. That was a superb rifle for the money and because it was so much better than a 700, they decided to charge a price consistent with the degree of superiority over a 700 and call it a 40X

I am not sure if I will buy another rem700, any one consider purchasing another rifles should consider the weatherby. all those I would consider the XR100.

I have three, 300 WM, 6BR and 223 Rem., only the 300 is stock, they all shoot well and are a great buy on the used market usually. Would I plock down $3000 on a new one.....probably not because I can use a custom action from a large number of manufacturers and have something unique. They are never the less one of the winningest actions out there and still used widely.

Weatherby??

There is nothing "precision" about a weatherby. a guaranteed sub 1.5MOA gun for 2+ grand...

If you want a factory rifle that WILL produce sub .5 MOA, buy a Savage F-Class rifle or a Tikka.

If you want to have competitive accuracy potential, then you want to go custom.

Yep, have to agree with most here. The old 40X's were nice back in the day, but today custom actions are the way to go if you want to compete. Hard to justify the $3000 expense for a 40X when a custom action, barrel, trigger, stock will net better results.

Once my 40X barrel looses accuracy it will get a new stainless match one and any value it once had is gone. To me it's a shooter, not a collector's piece.

What is a Weatherby Sub Moa than?, also if you go custom, you still have to get an action, and instead of Rem700 action, why not wheatherby Action?.

Wheatherby price there rifles very competitive.
I considered there action to be more superior than rem700 action, also there bolt have sako extractor build in. the only thing that are some what trouble are the barrel action thread, but that not hard to figure out!.

Well, again, we come back to the lack of aftermarket accessories. Nothing wrong with the action, I've worked with a few of them in their S&W, Mossberg guise, and they work just fine. If you want to build a "tacticool" rifle, all the accessories out there are designed around primarily Rem 700's and, to a lesser extent, the Savage action. FWIW - dan

Were the original 40X actions larger in diameter than the standard 700 action? Or was the increased rigidity just a function of not having the "hole" in bottom of the action for the magazine?
