Were the original 40X actions larger in diameter than the standard 700 action? Or was the increased rigidity just a function of not having the "hole" in bottom of the action for the magazine?

there were different 40X version not that long ago.

the XB was a solid bottom, the XC was a repeater with a clip charging guide, etc.

I wasn;t aware that any of them actually had thicker receiver walls as posted above.

Yes, but compare that with what's available for the Rem or Savage. Really, if the aftermarket toys are important to you, there is no contest. If you're building a hunting or varmint gun, sure go with a Vanguard/Mossberg/Howa/S&W. Or a Win or Ruger for that matter. Or whatever else floats your boat. - dan

They were all the same diameter, the increased rigidity comes from the lack of a magazine cutout. Another detail also that I don't often see mentioned is the fact that they were made in a short action length which also increased rigidity, even the 300 WM that I have is built on a short action.
