So I’ve had this 22LR Remington 541 Custom for some time.
Wonderful rifle, very accurate, looks great and is a joy to shoot.
Except the magazine...
The factory magazine is plastic and they have had the tendency to blow apart on me, don’t feed that well, are getting hard to find and in my opinion, overpriced when you can find them.
So one day I saw a Savage 64 metal magazine on the wall of the LGS and at the price of it I thought I’ll see if I can get it to work.
I nibbled out a metal latch from 5/16” key stock with nothing more than a hacksaw, file and a bit of Emory cloth.
I carefully fit it to the magazine and action then silver soldered it on, I had the stuff to do it for years but this is the first time I used it (thanks YouTube).
A little cold bluing and I was done, all in about 2-3 hours.
Took it to the range and it performed flawlessly. Easy in and out, perfect feeding with multiple brands of ammo and no more anxiety I’ll blow up a magazine and run out of them :)
So if you have a 541 and suffer the same issue there really is an easy fix and factory mags still work.

I just kept sending the broken plastic one back to Remington and they replaced them . . . but that was over 15 years ago!
Interesting that they find it cheaper to replace than build them right in the first instance other that there are many that buy new rather than find an alternate route.
