I just cleaned and installed a Volquartsen Hammer and Extractor in my 597. It doesn't return to battery when I rack the first round. If I dry fire it, it will fully return to battery. It sometimes fires (out of ~30 rounds it had at least 12 FTF). What do you think, does it need new recoil springs or did I not get everything assembled correctly?

The guide rods need to be adjusted. Those little allen head plugs in the rear of your receiver. you have to put the guide rod though the holes they go in, make sure they are just snug with your fingers if you over tighten them it slightly bows your guide rods :(

Yep it could be the guide rods flexing if they're tightened too much, causing the bolt to bind. Also check to ensure that your new extractor is seated properly...if you take the bolt out, you should be able to push the extractor outwards with your finger and have the spring return it to its original position. If it's not doing that smoothly, something's wrong.

I had the same problem with the 597. Just to many FTF and jams. I tried everything. For one thing I don't think the firing pin contacts the rim properly. Anyways I dumped it and got a ruger 10 22. Never, ever fails

No problems :D That's the biggest problem people have with them. The other thing that happens I think is they tighten them so tight they actually bend the rod then it will always bind until you replace the rods. just my opinon though ymmv :D
