Remington 597 any good?

Have a 597 TVP, which is the stainless heavy barrel with the Boyds Evo Stock from the factory.. has been reliable with all sorts of ammo but doesnt like getting dirty from cgeap Rem Thunderbolts.
Some issues are caused by overtightening the screws for the guide rods.. they don't need to be more than finger tight or it can cause binding.
There are kits available for trigger parts etc.

I have one and it runs flawlessly. Better than my 10/22 if you can believe that.

That said, I upgraded the springs and extractor (and maybe even the firing pin, but not sure on that), it was kind of a lemon when I got it. Very picky about mags. Since the upgrade I don't think it's choked on a single round. The parts weren't expensive either, so add that to the low cost of these guns, and you kind of have a winner.

Oh, I do think the charging handle is a little tiny, but I guess on par with the 10/22.

I like my 597, painted up here in a Boyds stock - but there's maybe 1% of the aftermarket that the 10/22 has.

Zero aftermarket parts in mine. I had one issue with mine, caused by not cleaning it, a FTE. All I have done as installed some studs so I can run a bipod and/or sling when I get the desire. I have the HB version.
Mags, well, I have 6 of them and not one has given me a problem out of the two 597 HB's that I have, one is mine and one is for my son. Mine has probably 20,000 rounds through it, my son probably has 7-8,000 through his.

I had a 10/22 and he liked it so we bought him one. Then my wife and son gave me the 597 for fathers day one year. I never got to shoot it. So we sold his 10/22 and bought him a 597. He hasn't looked back and I've sold my 10/22 since then as well. With the exception of the lack of aftermarket support for the 597, I think it's superior to the 10/22 action. When you start getting into big money 10/22's then maybe they will perform on par or slightly better. Obvious;y complete customs will perform better because there isn't much to do with a 597 with the parts that are out there.

I have this acc-sd and the hb models and both run flawlessly with factory mags. Any issues I’ve had have been with aftermarket mags.
Don’t over tighten the op rod set screws, back them off 1/4 turn and it should run well.
Mine eat everything with varying states of accuracy except Remington ammo, they hate Remington ammo.
Clean it well before your first outing.

Bought mine in well used condition in an archangel stock (tossed the rediculous plastic bajonet and flash hider)
and its absolutely great, no issues at all. Love it!

I have a 597 heavy barrel and an A22 and like the trigger better on the Savage. The magazines are better on the 597, but accuracy is about the same. The Savage 10 round magazine is irritating to load and not as good as a 10-22 mag.The Butler creek 25 round magazine fixes that problem.

Just Got a standard blued barrel with the ugly grey stock (in my opinion ) From P&D great gun so far no issues with copper plated bullets the cheap lead ones some times fail
Would have liked a new heavy barrel but can't find one anywhere But runs good so far only about 500 rnds through it yesterday Buy one if you can find one
