Remington 597 - HB .22 Cal

You mentioned BASS PRO, how is BASS PRO's customer service? Say you purchased a rifle, after 1st trip to the range, it has defects? Do you have to deal with Bass Pro or the manufacturer? I know, Le baron-Markham will take care of this since it was a manufacturing issue. Depending on who you are dealing with, they will either replace it with a new rifle or coordinate a warranty claim with the manufacturer. I am not familiar with how BASS PRO deals with defective firearms from the box.

I just got a R597 HB yesterday. Trigger is on the heavy side but I will be doing some polishing in the next few days. My immediate upgrade is the ARCHANGEL AA597R adjustable six-position stock. My only concern is, with R597HB, the barrel is just 16" long. Using this ARCHANGEL AA597R adjustable six-position stock, will I still be in the 26" length with the stock folded to avoid being re-classified as Restricted FA? Otherwise, I might have to add a fake suppressor to get into the legal length.
 
I polished the trigger (very little) and I have no issues with it. My major beef has been the extractor that came installed on it. It tends to cause stovepipes/double feeds. I have a Volq replacement on the way right now. I'll let you know how it goes.

Hate to be a negative nelly...
I'm pretty sure barrel extensions won't count towards your overall length. Fake suppressors, muzzle brakes etc...
 
Not that I would ever condone this but they are smaller than a pinkie nail (if you ever travel South)....lol


It is truly getting stupid to find parts though.
 
I got one at Cabela's. It performs the same as my other 597. 100% reliable. Feels like a full sized rifle. Shoots very, very, very accurate. Far superior to the 10/22
 
Got one from Lebaron. 13% off Lebaron card, $25 mail-in rebate, came to around $175 OTD.
Anyone put a bi-pod on it? Looks like there is a divot in the stock right around where one could be attached.
 
Ist trip from the range with a cheap Tasco red dot:

1. Accuracy: 9/10 capable of 1 hole @ 20 m, bench rested
2. Reliability: 8/10 Reason: The OEM 25-rd mag won't do LSHO. maybe some break-in required. 10-rd OEM magazine runs perfect. No major issues with Win Wildcat and Win 555. I will try CCI Blazer, and M22 next time. No FTE's and only 2 FTF out of 300 rds
3. Ergonomics: 8/10 because of the barrel weight. I knew this will be the case but the HB looks better than the tapered version and known to be more accurate than the tapered. I cannot confirm this but generally, HBs are built better. An Archangel/Promag 597 stock might be the next upgrade
4. Value for Money: 10/10

Sorry Ruger fans, this is a good option at far less the cost of a similar HB 10/22. But still needs some upgrades to be better. I am looking to test a 22 rd Promag magazine. Any idea where I can find one?

I have heard that report that the 25 rounder doesn't do last shot hold open.

I found a 25 rounder sitting in the garbage pail where people throw out their paper targets at spruce groce gun club. Discarded. Free.

So, I took it apart right then and there and saw that, yes, the spring was reversed. Turned it around, fired through the magazine 5 times. Perfect function. Last shot hold open worked 100%.

Of you're having those problems try turning your spring around. I also hear that the follower needs a bit of cleanup. That might be needed for it to go high enough for last shot hold open to work.

The magazine DOES support lsho yours may just need a bit of tweaking. I have hear of people even having to sand the sides of it as its too tight to slide out of the magwell with gravity when you press the release. Try all these things and report back :)

I love the 597. Bull barrel, great stock, and shoots accurate out-of-the-box. I put a Red dot scope on it. 30 round clip. Lots of fun and a lot less expensive than a Ruger. Never had an issue. It is very under rated and I attribute that to the lack of after market parts and customization options. IMO best bang for your buck.
 
LSHO FIX

Upon removing the trigger housing from the receiver, insert an empty mag. Notice the small notch on the side of the magazine where the tab of the magazine follower engages the LSHO lever, the lever has some wiggle even with the spring properly installed. This allows the tab to push the lever outward instead of upward and the bolt not engaging the LSHO feature. A temporary fix I did was to put a flat washer on the retaining pin. This minimizes the wiggle and tab to lever engages more efficiently. This is not a permanent fix until I find a suitable pin, bushing and spring.
 
I have the 597mag HB.
What I found very dissapointing was the bolt and op rods were completely covered with maching burrs which caused alot of FTF's and great concern.
There is no reason , except total laziness and poor quality control for this particular rifle to leave the factory.
However , once I de-burred the bolt and smoothed the op rods , the rifle functions beautifully and very accurrate.
I wrote an polite email to Remington about this and also asked if they had an opening in their quality control dept...never did hear back from them ...hahaha
If purchasing one of these , check it out thoroughly before shooting...Remington ain't what it used to be...
Otherwise I'm happy and quite confident with it now.
