Anybody experience accuracy problems with the heavy barrel 597's? I have a brand new 597 that no matter what type of ammo I use I keep getting two or three flyers then she'll start to settle down a bit til I empty the mag, then when I refill the mag it starts all over again. I have tried different tensions on the two screws that hold the barreled action into the stock, but it didn't make much difference, it got worse if anything. I did notice when I cleaned the barrel that the throat seems to be erroded or pitted, and as I run my brush down the bore there seems to be tight spots. Could I have a bum barrel? Should I contact Remington, or do I just look for a dealer? I bought the gun from Wholesale Sports, should I maybe contact them and get my money back? Some help would be appreciated, as I have never incountered this with a new rifle before.:(

First: Did you clean it really well (the barrel) before firing it?

Also, try a few groups with only 5 in the mag. It could be the bullets are getting pressed too hard up into the bolt for the first few.

Next, remove the action from the stock, and remove the two set screws holding the guide rods in the back of the breech, then loosen the rods to finger tight.

Failing that, go to Rimfire central and do a search in the remington forum under "First shot flyers".

I have a LS HB in .17 HMR....most accurate rimfire I've ever shot. Will hit 5/5 into a water bottle cap at 100, and de-prime shotgun hulls at 50.

Yes Ryan, I strip every gun and give them a through cleaning before using them. I did adjust the tension on those two set screws to snug but not finger tight. I'm just wondering about that barrel though? I will try Rimfire Central. Thanks
