Picked up a new 22lr semi auto rimfire recently. Its remington's new 597 HB. Here's the info from Remington's site:
http://remington.com/en/products/firearms/rimfire/model-597/model-597-hb.aspx

Basically, I bought this because it was cheap ($212 at lebarons) and I liked the looks of it with the olive drab stock and the short heavy barrel.
When it arrived, I was surprised by how light and well balanced it is, its not front heavy like I was expecting.
It has no sights but comes with a weaver rail already installed. I've mounted a cheap bushnell banner 4-12x40 scope on it. I've had it up to the range twice now to test it for function and accuracy.

As far as function is concerned, I've put about 500 rounds though it now without a single hiccup with the 2 factory 10 round mags **. No stoppages whatsoever and locked the bolt back every time on an emply mag. Ran a variety of ammo through it and out of what I had with me, it liked cci mini mags (40grn solid) and cci standard velocity best from an accuracy perspective. I also tried dynapoints, American eagle, federal bulk, and lapua standard club. It all functioned perfectly but oddly enough the most expensive ammo, the lapua, shot like a shotgun pattern.

The accuracy is very good also. First some 5 shot 50 yrd groups with cci standard velocity:

Here's a couple groups with cci mini mags. 5 shots at 50 yards:

Of course I'm only showing the best groups of my brief shooting session but I must say, the cci fodder was pretty consistent.

Out of the box my trigger was about 5lbs. Since shooting these targets though I have been able to get the trigger down to about 2lbs or so, by polishing the hammer and swapping out the sear spring. I'm hoping this tightens up the groups even more (its bone stock besides the bit of trigger work).

Overall very pleased with the accuracy and the reliability of this rifle. It has exceeded my expectations.

(** - I also purchased a Remington 30 round mag and it doesn't feed well at all. I'm still working on correcting it)

I picked one of these from lebarons as well.. 500 rounds down range and and have had no problems. Very accurate too.... Does anyone know of any reliable 25 rounds mags? Was gonna try the remington

I have two 30 round Remington magazines which run quite well. They did take a bit of work to get them to work as they should. If you buy them take them apart clean them. Remove any flash and mold seams, especially on the follower.

Of course...YMMV

From what I've found is that with the 30 round mags as long as you do a little sanding on them so that they drop out easily then they will run fine.,It seems that if you don't then they do not seat fully and will cause jams. In fact the only mag I've had a problem with is the most recent 10 round that I got from cabellas.

I loved both of my 597's (for the 2 weeks I had them) Bought the first on June 28th 2013

The first was the HB with Brake, and that thing could not stop jamming. didn't matter what ammo, or clip, but the Remington 30 was terrible. (trash for me) I contacted the Canadian Remington Arm and they suggested it was common and to take it back with a head gap issue. (FTF, Slamfire problems are common apparently these days.)

When the first one did fire it was pretty accurate with nice tight groups, but most I could go through was 7 rounds on a 10 round clip.

The second which I replaced the first with was a standard flat nose HB (no brake), and it was awesome out of the gate using the original 10 shot clips from the original rifle, accurate and tight for the first 250 rounds. Then it literally blew the bolt apart. Another slamfire, blew the extractor paw clear out of the gun along with a spray of burning gun powder and fragments.

After this I just want to share my experience and would recommend anyone to walk on by the 597. It is a nice looking and comfortable plinker, but not safe and certainly not stable. Something is seriously wrong with the current build.

Replaced with a Savage BSEV... Can't get a 10/22 in Winnipeg these days...

Interesting. I just got my trigger back from them and on test firing I had a slam fire. It didn't self destruct....yet. I've emailed the warranty center again. It's annoying because its a great fitting, great shooting gun. It just doesnt seem reliable.

I used to have a regular 597 that I sold to get a 10/22 just for the Maurauder kit. Handled the HB model on the weekend and loved it really want to go back to the 597 now :(

2200 rounds and counting. No misfires, maybe 20 stove-pipes when the chamber gets really grungy.

Bit of a PITA to get the guide rod springs stuffed back into the receiver and the bold handle is a little wiggly but no real issues otherwise.

The $100 Nikon Prostaff fits the rifle well and the BDC reticle is pretty close with Federal bulk at 100m

I have a regular 597 only complaint is the mag's jam up once in awile, my accuracy at 100 yards is about toonie sized groupings not bad if you ask me!

I founded with mine if I wasn't shooting something that's wasn't going over 1000 Fps it wouldn't cycle. So I got a bunch of rounds over 1000 Fps and it works great. I love it. I added a swivel mount on the front for a bipod and good to go. Now to shoot some gophers.

The only thing I did to mine was try to lighten the trigger. It has run like a champ from the get go (never did get the 30 round mag to function though). Not a single failure with the stock mags from day 1.

Got several mod ideas to try. But I need a new BOLT to work on. I don't want to mess up with the original part for warranty purposes. Western Gun Parts will not sell due to liability issues. Gunsmith sale only. Brownells is out, so as Numrich. Any dealer who might sell this within Canada?
