Anyone here own one? How well does it shoot? Notably better than a stock 597?

With the prices coming down lately I've been tempted to pick up one of these babies. My 597 will shoot well enough for me, but I've always wanted a bull barrel 597 with a laminate stock.

Are these worth it?

Picked one of these up about a month ago from LeBarons with the laminate stock and heavy barrel. They were 10% off plus the $20.00 rebate. I haven't shot one of the standard models but I'm quite happy with the function and accuracy of this one.

Couple other semi .22's in the rack including a Ruger 10-22 deluxe but like you I just had to have the heavy barrel model. I'd say definetly worth it - happy with mine

I have had mine for about three months and I am very happy with it as well. It has laminate "evolution" stock on it - beauty. Sits very well in my hands. Groups nicely at 50 yards, no jams or misfires of any sort, pleasant trigger. Mine came with rail already installed, so choice of optics is easy as receiver has 22 scope grooves as well - you can mount just about anything. The only thing I needed to do is to install sling eye bolt upfront to mount bipod.

That's a sweet looking rife, 22lr.

Thanks for the advice guys. Now I just need to decide if I want this, or to save further and get a Garand.

^^ they don't IMO, becasue 597 has better barrel/receiver joiner. 10/22 with heavy aftermarket barrel maybe an accurate gun but receiver has never been designed for heavier barrel. Plus 597 "heavy" barrel is a bit lighter than the one on 10/22, sort of sweet spot where it makes an accurate rifle without too much weight penalty, again thats my opinion.

I swear all the guys who diss the 10/22's accuracy either just can't shoot or they're dragging on a lame joke.

the gun shoots fine and unlike the remington there's tons of aftermarket for it in which case you can make the gun shoot better than most .22s out there.

Ugh!

Can we have a SINGLE thread about any other rifle than the 10/22 that DOESN'T devolve into a thread about 10/22's!

It's like some people have a one track mind when it comes to .22LR rifles.

But while we're on the topic:

The same people who care about after-market parts availability are the same type of people who buy $5000 Honda Civics and put $10,000 of mods into them to make them look and sound like race cars.

Personally, I'd prefer to just buy a rifle as-is and put in a few inexpensive mods to make it a tack-driver, and that's all the 597 really needs out of the box. I have absolutely no need for a 'tactical' (more like tacti-cool) .22LR rifle with a folding or telescoping stock, accessory rails, fake silencers, front grip, a 50 round drum, laser sights, flashlights... or any other of the widely available cheap after-market crap for the 10/22... most of which doesn't even belong on a .22LR rifle to begin with.

Even Ruger is offering 'out of the box' performance with Heavy Barrel models, Remington just does it at less expense to the buyer. That extra $100 or $150 I save buying a Remington will buy a lot of ammo and a VQ hammer... which is all you really need.

Rant off.

^^^exactly! All those talks and hesitance... only to find a year later both rifles in your cabinet.

The prices seem to be fairly similiar between the Ruger Target and the Heavy barrel 597. Like the heavy barrel target, the Ruger Target only needs a new trigger.

Frankly considering the two items are in direct competition with each other, it makes sense that someone would compare the two when trying to decide which one to buy. I know two years ago when I bought my semi .22 it came down to the 597 and the Ruger.

I suspect I would have been happy with either decision. Which is a win win for everyone looking for this type of firearm.

I have to admit that I forgot about the price difference. While it's significant, I don't think it's really fair to quote the US MSR price for the Ruger. I've seen it for around $400 in Canadian stores.
There's about a $100 difference on average between the two.

Ruger 10/22 T (this is the blued model, not the stainless)

Wholesale price $439.95.

SIR price $ Target model not listed

Remington 597 Target (blued also with comparable laminate stock to the Ruger)

Wholesale price $329.95

SIR price $279.99 (Not sure if that price has already taken the $20 rebate off or not -I'm guessing it has).
