Well I ended up buying a basic 597 package w/ scope for the lady to use at the range. I wanted a 10/22 but everyone in S.Alberta seems to be sold out!
What are easy to do mods to improve the function of this cheap little auto?
Trigger seems to be very stiff so that will probably need a polish.

I'd also appreciate any info regarding what to expect for accuracy and reliability.

Swap out the original for a VQ hammer, makes the trigger really nice. Back out the two screws on the rear of the action so there's no binding when the bolt comes back on recoil. A dremel works wonders for hogging out the barrel channel if you have a steady and patient hand, then finish with a file and/or 120 -ish grit paper.

You can also use a dowel with sand paper or use your imagination. You can even fit some aluminum tape inside the action for a tighter fit.

My rifle runs great to about 600-700 rounds, then gets fussy, more so in the winter. Then you spray RemOil or WD-40 in the action, and run it for another 500 rounds before it's too fussy or you feel guilty of neglect.:p

As said before get the hammer and extractor, float the barrel, loosen the guide rods, use a dry lube like graphite of moly. Oh and don't forget to out shoot 10/22's

Ive had a few problems with mine that I was able to work out... I polished and reshaped the sear/hammer for smoother operation and a crisper break. I filled in the hole that is cut out of the hammer with a brass slug to add some mass and ensure hard primer strikes. I also cleaned up and sharpened the edge of the extractor for reliable ejection.

With mine some of the high capacity mags were poorly sized around the feed lips and would cause drag against the bolt. I was getting FTF's because the bolt would come to rest slightly out of battery (rebound off the breach face then not come fully forward). If I were to manually push the bolt forward after every cycle it would fire reliably but would regularly light strike when fired semi.

I colored the bottom of the bolt with a sharpie then cycled action with the mags in to mark where they were dragging. I filed away the excess material around the top of the mag until they functioned properly.

Mine now runs as well as I expect any rim fire semi to function with bulk ammo (odd FTF now and then) and sees little cleaning between sessions.

It's also dressed up a bit...

A year or so ago i found an article on rimfire central explaining how to make your remmy have an adjustable trigger pull and it really works! ive been trying to find it but i cant seem to...

it involves drilling out the trigger assembly where there is a sort of plastic nub that stops the trigger linkage i think, you thread this hole youve just drilled out and replace with a set screw (#8 i think) and a little spring ahead of it, you then tighten the set screw on that spring while testing the action for catching the hammer.

sorry for such a vague summary but i cant find the article, it really works though the combination of this mod, the volq hammer, and a set screw for overtravel make the trigger just like the pull on my old BSA heavy barrel 22, its a real beaut!
