Hello I just bought a new Remington 597 on Friday and put only like 30 rounds through it and the bolt handle fell out/off. Its a .22 and I was just wondering if anyone else has one and knows if it just has to snap in a certain way to stay in or if its always going to be like this, or even if this is something remington knows about and will replace. I have read quite a few other stories on the internet of this happing to people, and some of the responses that they are getting is that it is a saftey feature, however it falls off every 10 shots which is so anoying I almost lost it 3 times while shooting. Any help or suggestions would be appreciated !!

Thanks

I just bought one myself today, but no issues with the bolt handle falling off.. In fact when i tried to take it apart to clean it i found it difficult to remove my handle so i could get the bolt out.

On top of the bolt there is a small spring arm. This applies pressure to the underside of the bolt handle. You could disassemble the rifle, and try to pull that spring up a little, that should help with keeping the handle in place.

Keep in mind, i am not a gunsmith. Also keep in mind that the spring, is made of spring steel which can break if too much force is applied...

Or, take it back and get another one...seeing as it's new, that would be the route I'd take.

It shouldnt fall off during shooting. Ive had mine for a few months and put a couple thousand rounds through it and it hasnt fell off. However when you field strip your gun your suppose to remove the bolt handle so you can take apart the 597 barrel, action area etc. Mine comes off fairly easy, but it hasnt fell off while shooting

As stated above, it is held in place by a spring. If you disassemble the bolt, the spring can be tweaked to hold the bolt knob more securely. Also there is a divot in the bolt know which is supposed to secure the knob in position, maybe needs to be wiggled around a bit to find the sweet spot.
