I just recently acquired a 597 mag and disassembled, cleaned and oiled it. I managed fine with the notorious guide double springs and got the trigger group back in. At the last step, however, I think I did something stupid... The safety seemed to be stuck and I thought to "reset" it by rotating that J-shaped keyhole of the "Intergrated Security System" on the safety crossbolt. I used a screwdriver and didn't force anything-it moved easily from the white dot (open) to the red dot (lock). Well after turning it from the red dot to the white dot, it refuses to turn back.
The gun didn't come with a key and I have no idea what the end looks like. Is there something special about the end of it that makes it impossible to jimmy? Would I have to order a new key from Remington, or is there a way to unlock it with some other tool or technique?
If I need a key, does anyone know of a source for Remington 597 Mag parts in Canada? Thanks in advance for any help you can send my way.
