Remington 597 stuff

I have a Marlin 60. I'll have a look at the handle. The Marlin does not have the same level of looseness as the Remington has. What features would you like to improve on your Marlin handle. For example is it only the fit that bothers you or would you prefer to have it longer or larger diameter? If you are interested in a Remington handle send me a PM.
 
An interesting bit of information. One member who got a bolt handle from me sent me this pic of the spring retaining rivet in his bolt. The head of the rivet sits above the groove. It is meant to be sitting at the bottom of the groove. I milled and extra groove in the bottom of his handle to allow it to fit due to this issue. The first pic shows his bolt and the second is a normal one. The third shows the extra groove milled to provide clearance.








 
I also noticed last time I cleaned my 597 that the rivet tends to pop out slightly after a while. I always make it a point to check this rivet after a cleaning session. The head of this rivet should be be at the same level of the groove on the bolt. With an added groove on the handle, this will allow further movement of the rivet outward. I think it is better not to add the extra groove. It will definitely make the installation easier, but will allow extra movement on the retaining rivet.

:agree:I agree but his rivet is tight and seems to be installed off centre in the groove so the head can't drop into it. He has tried to seat it with a punch but it won't move. This was a necessary work around for his rifle. The factory handle does nothing to retain the rivet so the longer design will have the added benefit of keeping the rivet seated.

It has been suggested that a larger diameter, blued handle would look good. I made this one up. It is a little shorter (.750" instead of 1") but a larger diameter (.450") and cold blued. Weight is 15 grams.

^ They are, I just ordered one and John sent me PM with photos of it completed. My 597 is starting to come together: tacticool stock, VQ extractor, threaded bbl, DIP scope mount...and now the custom charging handle. I'm giddy like a schoolgirl.
 
I did these 4 this weekend.





I just got some carbide end mills last week. They are much better than the high speed steel ones I have been using and make the milling go much faster.:D
 
My charging handle came in today and I love it!!!!!! Met the postman in my drive way so I hurried back in the house and took my 597 to the shop to tinker on and get my handle on while i was tinkering with my KLR..... Very pleased with the craftsmanship and happy to buy from fellow CGN'r.

Finally got all the bits together to tweak my new Remington 597 HB -

M*Carbo trigger bushings and spring smoothed and reduced the pull,
and johnnyc14's charging handle (as seen below) is the icing on the cake!

His later models are large diameter, well knurled and hollow as suggested earlier.
The fit is absolutely great, with none of the slop of the factory plastic piece; should be considered a mandatory upgrade on any 597.
