Remington 597 tear down?

Have you had any issues with 597 and certain ammo? Just got one last week and it did NOT like cheap Winchester ammo, could not get through the 10 round clip without it jamming up. However I put Federal into it and it tears right through them no problem.

It actually is quite easy to break down, just remove the two allen head screws to remove the barrel and action from the stock.
Then push out the pin at the back of the action, this will allow you to separate the trigger group from the action.
At this point I would just use and elastic to hold the bolt back while you clean away as best as you can unless like was said earlier things are REALLY gross as the rails really are a PITA to get back in properly... I can do it pretty good now, but the first time there was quite a bit of cursing and time spent on it.
I don't even really run patches through the barrel routinely because there really isn't ever much crud in there, but the action really gets gummed up so I concentrate on that using Remington action cleaner and the usual gun cleaning stuff. Remember to lube the rails with some gun oil too before you're done.

PS: I haven't found one 597 yet that will do anything but jam when fed Winchester ammo of any kind. They really do love the Federal stuff and CCI Blazers though. The heavy barrels like the high velocity Gameshock stuff and the Velocitors and struggle with the bulk pack Federals for some reason. Still looking for a perfect round for the heavy barrels.

I found the instructions in the manual easy to follow. the guide rod can be a pain in the ass to put back in. I also found that the hold open catch and the pin and spring that hold it in place can come loose if you are fiddling around with the trigger housing. Just did it two days ago. Pulled the rails out and everything. What a pain in the ass. That night my girlfriend was over and we were getting her a little more acquainted on the cleaning aspect of guns (she already knows how to shoot) and I couldn't get the rails back in. So after a little bit of swearing I said screw it. The next morning I went back to it and figured out a "very easy" way of putting them back in. Took a couple of seconds per rail and spring.

Pull them rails out and polish them! Then put them back together with teflon dry lube. When you put the allen screws back in, only tighten them to flush, let the rails float and you'll have far fewer jams. I know it's a pain in the ass but it's worth it.

federal bulk packs work great although not quite as accurate in my opionion than remington, however the copper plated bullets keep your bore very clean, my gun hates winchester ammo as well, going to try high end ELEY target ammo next time to test for accuracy.
