Remington 597 TVP Cycling Problems

I picked up a new 597 TVP last weekend. Took it out to the range for some fun and was sorely dissapointed. About every second or third round wouldn't cycle properly. It would stovepipe or the bolt wouldn't slide all the way back enough to cause the hammer to engage the sear. :mad:
I was using cheap Federal Bulk Pack and thought it was an ammo issue of not causing enought kick to the bolt.
I ripped the rifle apart to the last screw and polished the guide rails, bolt, hammer and the sear on the buffing wheel.
Lubed it all up and took it back to the range for another test. Shot a whole box of 525 rounds without a single issue :D The trigger is a lot lighter and really smooth and crisp as well.
Now to get the scope sighted properly and I'll be really happy with my investment.
 
It amazes me how remington can charge so much between models of 597 and still have the same inherent problems. The feeding problem I'd expect on the $200 base model I have (which shoots great) but not the HB magnum I used to have. I really like my 597 but I wish Remington would go the extra step and finish them properly. How long did it take to polish up the parts? 30 minutes? Probably the biggest thing you did to improve feeding reliability was loosen the guide rod retaining screws.
 
I tested my 597 with three different ammo a couple of weeks ago. The Federal 525 performed the worst. Feeding problems, stove piping, went full auto a few times :eek: and the accuracy was pretty bad. It was very frustrating to shoot the Federal. The Winchester Xpert was much more reliable but the most inaccurate of the three (6" groups at 50m :eek:). To my surprise, the cheap and dirty Remington was the most accurate and most reliable ammo.
Luckily, my Savage MKII FV shoots fine with the Federal 525, so I can still use all those Walmart bricks but it's no food for the 597.

I am getting 1/2" @ 50m with CCI standard. No complaints against accuracy here. Only improvement was a VQ hammer.

I took my time with the polishing to make sure that I didn't round over any edges. I say at lease an hour. But then again I love tinkering so time flys. I think it was time well spent but too bad Remington doesn't ship the higher end target models with this work already done.
 
My TVP shoots great. When I got it, I cleaned it, treated the guide rods with Gun Juice and hit the range. Sub-MOA at 50 as well. Dynapoints are very good in mine as are CCI mini mags. Gonna try some Lapua just for fun!
