Remington 597 vs Ruger 10/22?

for 190$ shipped to my door.....

will a lower end 597 still be worth it?

also what scope do you put on it? will it break the bank? and bipod?

....lots of Qs here....spoonfeed me! :runaway:

I think lower end 597 will still be worth it. Firstly, the main difference in savings on lower end is a stock which is not a bid deal. We are not dealing with magnum loads and you can always glass bed it anyway. Action is the same. Barrel is thinner which means some loss of accuracy. There will be no accuracy losses attributed to barrel-receiver joiner like 1022 or Savage 64 or Cooeys. Friend of mine bought it not long ago and hes quite happy, although I would personally invest another 20-30$ and get heavy barreled model with the same "budget" stock.

But then again, looking at my yellow jacket I say it was my best firearm acquisition in 2007. It is a big step up of course, another 200$ almost but to me it is important upgrade.

Bipod - I have bipods on almost all my long guns. They do not add too much weight but come very handy when you need them. Not to mention "look cool" factor

Buy a good set of alien keys as well - you will need some not very common sizes to strip your 597 for thorough cleaning.

how do you know this one is not the heavy barreled model? how can i tell?

and what does glass bed it mean?

bravo - most of the time bull barrel will be mentioned in specks as it is an important thing. You can also see it on a picture, if you see barrel is tapered (thinner at the muzzle end) then it is not very heavy. Besides, some extra weight at the muzzle end is always a good thing on 22 rifles. Glass bedding - this is when you basically smear your receiver with few layers of mold release agent and then mix devcone and smear it into inside the stock and then assemble your rifle. Simplified of course - you can find a lot of reading on a subject (google comes to mind) - it makes a perfect fit between metal part of your rifle and wood or plastic.

My experience with the 10/22 was that they take a lot of work and aftermarket parts before they start to perform 'adequately.' Of the 6 or 7 10/22's that I have firsthand experience with, most have varying degrees of feeding problems, or 'barn door' accuracy issues. Coupled with a piss-poor factory trigger, I'd pass on them in the future.

I have less experience with the 597, though the ones I've seen/used have had far fewer deficiencies. I've heard reports that some have had feed issues, though I've not experienced this myself.

My 2c would be to suggest a 597 if you expect the rifle to 'just work' out of the box, and a 10/22 if you *plan* on upgrading it. Because with a 10/22, you *will* upgrade it (if only out of necessity).

Could be a quality control issue, as my first standard model 10/22 I bought back in 1991, is a tack driver, and was from day one.
In 1999 I bought another for my son, it was a POS as far as accuracy goes.
Sold it after a few months.
Only thing I did with mine, was install Tru glo sites on it.,
and modified the hold open mechanism.
This gun has had thousands of rounds through it, and has taken care of countless un-wanted critters of all sizes.

this looks like a descent compromise, laminate stock and heavy barrel for some 150$ more.

so i was about to buy it when the guy informed me that they are out of stock and have been on order since october so it doesnt look good at the moment.

i called Russell Sporting and they informed me that they have 4 in stock and they must be the "old" models since they are now listed as "discontinued"

can anyone confirm that the 597 laminate with HS barrel is discontinued?

also, do you know if it is shipped with a metal or plastic mag?
