Remington 597 vs Ruger 10/22?

I'm sure this has been discussed already, but I want to buy a .22 pretty quick here and I've always been looking at the Ruger because it's a legendary .22, has tons of optional bits to put on it and feels nice to hold.

The 597 is $100 cheaper, already has a bipod mount, feels good but looks cheaper than the Ruger, but I like the mag release much much more than the Ruger.

I'm also excluding all other .22s because none of them have the 25 to 30 shot magazines you can buy for the 597 and the 10/22 and that is a much for gopher blastage in my opinion.

I've heard the Remington is more accurate out of the box too. I haven't shot either rifle before so I'm flying blind here. Honestly, I'm leaning towards the Remington at this point, but still looking over my shoulder at the Ruger... HELP!
 
I have one of each, I had some minor problems with the Remington. There is a small spring inside that would affect the trigger pull, when i removed it, the rifle worked great. The only catch of removing that little spring was that the bolt does not lock open after all the rounds have been ejected. My ruger has around 10,000 rounds put through it and works great. It has been a work horse, I take it to the farm and blast away, never had any problems. As far as accuracy the Remington has a scope and a bipod, and is very accurate. the 10/22 has a red dot and is good but not as good. I have a Savage Mrk2 that has a heavy barrell and acu-trigger, it beats them both hands down. But If your shooting in that 50 yard range, the 10/22 is great. Also there are so many after market parts for it that you can change whatever you want on it. I'm completely rebuilding mine right now. So I would say go with the Ruger. I f you wanna spend some more and have a GTAW(gopher tactical assault weapon)lol, I would say go with Savage. Hope that helps a little.Feel free to pm me if have questions.
 
fair enough potatos, i think the majority will fall towards the infamous 10/22 for mods, tho some people love the 597 right out of the box for accuacy.

Mods are huge for the ruger
 
I don't want arguments... just opinions of people who own them. What I seem to hear is that the Remington is more accurate, but the Ruger is more customizeable.
I'm not too interested in customizing, accuracy is first and foremost for me so I'll probably go with the Remington.

I bought two 597`s about 3 weeks ago. One for me and one for my wife. Mine is the synthetic stock regular barrel, hers is the synthetic stock Stainless barrel. I put a Cabela`s Pine Ridge tactical rimfire scope on mine. I did the minor fixes that were recommended and it has been flawless. I don`t plan on doing many mods as it is my first rifle ( I normally shoot handguns) and just wanted a plinker to start and plan I getting something bigger. We love going out in the woods and shooting all day for about 50 bucks. :)
 
My experience with the 10/22 was that they take a lot of work and aftermarket parts before they start to perform 'adequately.' Of the 6 or 7 10/22's that I have firsthand experience with, most have varying degrees of feeding problems, or 'barn door' accuracy issues. Coupled with a piss-poor factory trigger, I'd pass on them in the future.

I have less experience with the 597, though the ones I've seen/used have had far fewer deficiencies. I've heard reports that some have had feed issues, though I've not experienced this myself.

My 2c would be to suggest a 597 if you expect the rifle to 'just work' out of the box, and a 10/22 if you *plan* on upgrading it. Because with a 10/22, you *will* upgrade it (if only out of necessity).
 
Very happy with my new 597 «Yellow Jacket», fun to shoot, accurate out of the box, and factory moded with heavy barrel et laminated stock for 450$
 
Owned both and still have my 597. My 10/22 needed some aftermarket parts to get it to shoot only slightly better than my relatively stock 597. If you're the type that likes to upgrade and do mods, go with the 10/22. Otherwise, go with the 597.
 
I had both and got rid of the 10/22 as it just did not seem as accurate and the feel was not just quite right. Out of the box the 597 was more accurate and had a better feel for me. I am sure the Ruger would have been a decent rifle but I really did not feel like getting a new barrel, stock, trigger group and ect... to make it into what the 597 was out of the box for a 100 dollars cheaper.
 
A have a 597 HB LS and I love it to death, I can run 25 rounds through it as fast as my finger can pull the trigger(the 30 round clip cycles better with 25 rounds than it does 30).

One thing I have learned first hand and also from reading on rimfirecentral.com is that the remington 597 is typically fairly sencitive to the brand of ammunition. Luckily for me , mine love the federal bulk ammo, but I have a brick of Remington cyclones that I am honestly getting 50% misfires with them. put in the federals and problem solved. So be prepared, you might have to try a couple different kinds of ammo before you find one that fire consistantly and accuratly with the 597.
 
I have the ruger 10/22 i love the look of it and the feel. With the 25 round banana clip on it it looks like a little assault rifle. Accuracy is excellent on it so far and only had one misfire out of 500 rounds.....I looked at the remington first due to the price but the synthetic stock just felt so cheap....I may get one if the accuracy is as good as people are reporting just because they are so damn cheap!
 
with the exception of the AR-15 the 10/22 is probably the most mod-able/supported by aftermarket rifle there is.


Get the 10/22 and make it exactly how you want it.


ps, I've never had any accuracy or reliability issues with mine. It has performed flawlessly since day one.
 
I bought a Remington 597 a year ago and I haven't been let down yet. It's very accurate out of the box for a semi-auto. I haven't done any mods to it yet, as I don't feel any are needed. I may add a VQ hammer and extractor later, but only because people seem to like them.

Just make sure the bolt guide-rails aren't over tightened, and the rifle is good to go.

As for ammo: Federal Bulks will function flawlessly, but accuracy is lacking. Winchester Dynapoints are accurate but suffer reliability issues. For the best of both worlds, try CCI Blazers. I've got a pack of Federal Auto Match that I haven't tried yet, but reviews are good.
 
Thanks everyone, that's exactly what I need to hear.
I just got back from blasting gophers with my .223 and I'm not sure any .22 will come close to that! It was like watching them step on land mines at times the way they flew through the air!
I can't afford to keep blowing them up with .223 though, so I'm pretty sure I'm going to go for the 597, and my Dad is probably going to get the Ruger, so we can see for ourselves since we really can't agree to have one over the other.
