Im sure this isnt an original thread by any means but the search function isnt working at all for me right now.

Im not a big rimfire guy, Im starting to diversify now that I feel Ive acheived satisfactory performance in other fields. That being said Im starting to see the advantages in cost to owning rimfire. I was wondering if there were any stark differences in performance and cost between these two rifles. I think I am going to go with a Savage with the accutrigger for a Bolt .22lr rifle but I remain undecided between these two semi's. I see a varying price range on both, obviously different models are going to have varying prices but is there a general consencious to which has a higher quality to cost ratio? or is it similar to the difference between dodge, ford and chevy? where there is little actual difference in quality and options and each manufacturer produces a competitive product with the variable lemon type situation?

I am sure some people will choose one over other. I have shot both side by side. The real difference the amount of aftermarket parts available. If you want stock, out of the box performance they are very close from what I have seen. However sticking to your automotive metaphor, the ruger is the 350cid Chevy small-block of the bunch. You can get cheap aftermarket parts from anywhere, and piles of them. If you like to tinker and make a rifle "yours" the 10/22 is the choice.

Out of the box they both suck equally, and your better sticking to your Savage MKII if you like shooting tiny groups. ;)

They both need some trigger components, or a trigger job in order to reach an acceptable level of accuracy IMHO.

The downside to the Rem 597 is the crappy mags, and the trigger, followed by a lack of aftermarket upgrades including mags, barrels, stocks, etc. The extended mags for the 597 suck by the way so if you want high cap mags don't pick the 597.

The downside to the Ruger 10/22 is that it costs a bit more, and you are bound to throw a bunch of money into it if you want it to come anywhere close to the Savage accuracy wise. If the plan is shoot alot and shoot fast then the 10/22 with some Butler Creek Steel Lips mags is also a ton of fun.

Personally I find the 597 the better bet out of the box if you are happy with leaving it as is, but if you want to tinker at all the 10/22 is hard to beat.

I never shot the remington 597 but I heard they are okay guns. They have twin bolt guides (which is nice) and last shot hold open (which is also cool). I got a 10/22 and loved it since the first time I pulled the trigger. 10/22s rarely jam and if you put a bit of money into aftermarket parts you will have a real shooter.

I've got the 597, it was my first gun. I've had it just over a year now and have never needed to pull it apart. It runs smoothly, eats every ammo I've used in it (no subsonics yet) after a 100 round break-in with Yellowjackets. I'll get about 5 rounds in a Federal 525 pack that don't fire but when I try to refire them they still won't go.. not convinced it's the guns fault or just that 1 : 100 that's a dud. Using boxed ammo I don't think I've had more than 5 misfires in 2-3k rounds.

There's very little aftermarket for the 597. It's a buy it and use it gun, IMO. The 10/22 is a bit more money but far more supported, if you like to tinker.

I'm very happy with my 597. Get's decent groupings at 50 yards. I just put a Leopold scope on mine, and need to pick up some sand for my new bags. We'll see if I can tighten them up a bit more. The club recently got approval for .22 at the 100 yard range so I'll have to lay off the coffee this week and try some longer distance shots this weekend.

My 597 was dead accurate out of the box at 50 yards, we had a ruger take down that needed some adjustment out of the box... I personally prefer shooting the 597 it is closer to a full size rifle, the bolt stays open on the last round, the sights are adjustable without a hammer, the barrel is much thicker and I could not get used to the awkward mechanism on the ruger. I was skeptical buying the 597 after reading an array of bad reviews but 3000+ rounds so far so good.

But ruger has been the fan favorite for years that has to stand for something.

I have both a 597VTR and an old 10/22 (metal trigger group) both are excellent guns. My buddy bought brand new 597 (package with 3-9 scope, green plastic stock) and that shoots just fine straight out of the box. On the other hand his new 10/22 has a lot of fte and ftf. He has not modified either gun so we shall see how they perform over the long term.
My own preference is for the 597, it seems to be more accurate for me in either configuration (VTR and standard).

Contrary to alot of opinion on CGN, I have had nothing but great experiences with the 597. Mine has been amazing from right out of the box. My best friend got one a year before me and has had equally as good luck with his. Great sights, great accuracy, not picky on ammo. I have heard great things about the 10/22 aswell though.

I own both. Both are fun and accurate. But I would rate 10/22 higher because of smoothness of action and less number of jams. Just my personal opinion and I am not an expert by any stretch of imagination.

One more for the 597 team...

I've owned both. The 10/22 does have lots of aftermarket bits n' pieces (you can almost build a whole rifle) if that's your thing. I no longer tolerate them on the premises.

I love my 597. Very smooth (double guide rods/heavy bolt) operation. It's also a "full sized" .22.

Although not asked about, don't overlook Marlins either!

Not to de-rail the thread here- but does anyone have experience with the Rem 597 HB (Heavy Barrel)? I've been eying one up in the Cabelas catalog, and indecision is getting the better of me. Plus, from what I've read 597s have extractor issues, correct? Or has it been corrected?

I have the standard 597 and the barrel is much thicker than the barrels on my wife's 715t and my dads 10/22... I have had no extractor problems whatsoever we are into 1000's of rounds spits out Winchester bulk brass all day long.

I too was weary because of all the reviews with flying extractors but chalked it up to older production and crossed my fingers that they had ironed that problem out ... so far so good.

I have both.
My 597 is still new. It has maybe 500 rounds through it. It was a jam-o-matic when I first tried it out. I was using some old Winchester target I had leftover in my range bag. I switched to Blazers and its functioned fine since. I find the magazines are harder to load than the 10/22.
The 597 is comfortable to shoot and accurate out of the box but my vote still goes to the 10/22.
10/22’s and high cap magazines seem to be in short supply according to our neighbours to the South.

I had a 597, sold it and bought a Savage 64 instead. The Remington was the worst gun I ever owned or shot. It grouped like a 12 gauge with buckshot at 50 yards off a benchrest with every kind of ammo I could find with scope and irons. Never had any issues cycling and whatnot, it just didn't shoot worth a crap.

The savage 64 is a pretty good gun. I had one and loved it, but I hated the fact that you had to remove the barrel every time you clean it and loose you zero. The solution? ... A 10/22 ;)

I own both the Remington 597 and the Ruger 10/22 with scopes. Both of them prefer Winchester 555 copper plate hollow point ammo, neither of them is superior in accuracy but I do find the 597 has longer range. I got the Remington on a whim because the store was selling off its stock of them at $149 including a 3x9 zoom scope. The Ruger controls are a pain in the butt with gloves on. If I had to get rid of one of them, adios Ruger..
