Hey there folks....

I'm considering picking up either a Remington 597 or a Savage A22. I've seen reviews online for both, but was hoping that some owners/ shooters may be able to provide any personal anecdotes that may be able to sway me one way or the other. I'm not interested in 10/22's, so please try to keep the discussion between these two, as they are the only two models I am looking at purchasing in the next little bit.

Cheers, and thanks for your time and input!

Had a 597, felt cheap, but was reliable with factory 10 rd mags, the reviews on the 30 rd mags were garbage at the time. I think they have gotten better. The a22 (have not handled one) is suposed to have good aftermarket mags, factory 10 rd mags have some love hate, also suposed to be accurate

I have a 597, as does my son. We both had 10/22’s. Then I got the 597 for Christmas one year. My son, 10 at the time maybe, decided to sell his 10/22 in favor of the 597. My hunting partner picked one up as well.
The only issue I’ve had with the three of them is mine. The bolt hold open spring broke. It’s a $0.50 spring and easy to swap out. It happened early on and has given me no further problems.
The only ammo I have tried that it doesn’t seem to like is the Winchester 222, 333, or 555 boxes. It like Winchester Wildcat but really likes the American Eagle stuff.

They’re re a little upgradeable , but if that’s why you want it, I will reluctantly and hesitantly point you in the direction of the 10/22. You can completely build one without using a single Ruger part and will undoubtedly have a great shooting rifle. I don’t like the function of them and that is the biggest reason I got rid of mine.
Lately I have seen Ruger 10/22 target rifles popping up from $850 and up, and I think this are base for modifications, at least for me. I think the only thing I would keep “might” be the barrel and stock. And that’s a big might.

I know you don’t want to go that way but the aftermarket for either that you have mentioned is very slim, the 597 having a bit more from what I’ve found, the A22 still being fairly new.

I bought a 597 heavy barrel a few years ago. Excellent accuracy but the stock trigger pull sucked big time. Replaced the hammer with a Volquartsen and it is a new rifle. Now I love it. Green stock and matte black barrel look good to me and the front of the stock has a nice shape and feels good shooting it.
No experience with the Savage.
