Remington 597 vs Stevens Trapper?

I have no experience with either rifle but my dad has talked about having either of them but won't spend the money on himself, so Santa will be bringing him one this year. Price between them isn't enough to make me lean one way or another. I like the 597 because I can get it in camo which he likes, but I from the reviews I have read, people either love them or really hate them. I like the trapper for it's smaller size or as dad calls it, "a cute little gun".

He won't be using it as a plinker, mostly carrying it during his woods walks, so bolt vs semi doesn't make me lean one way or another. If it was your money to spend, how would you do it? (I have an older 10/22 but he's not a fan of the newer models which is why it isn't in consideration)

Bolt action .22s are just way too much fun. If it were me Id get him the Stevens, semis are fun but the novelty for me wore off pretty quick after shooting my brothers Cooey model 75.
 
I've got an older 597 and have no problems. If that's what you like, I say go for it.
Tough call because they are completely different guns, and I like them both.
Maybe Santa has room in his bag for both.;)
 
I have had no issues with my 597, having said that though, I've only put 100 rounds through so far. All of the negative comments I have read about them have been about older models, primarily magazine feed issues. These issues seem to have been worked out now though. As with any firearm, you just have to find which ammo the gun likes.
 
I have the Stevens trapper. Works very well. I put a 5 shot mag in it as the 10 shot interfered a bit with my fingers. As your dad stated 'cute little gun'. Thats why i got one as well. Very compact and light.
 
I have the Steven's which I use as a car\truck gun as well as my go to for walking about in the bush checking trail cam's etc. It fits nicely in a storage compartment under the seats and is easy to carry. Used it once to dispatch a distempered Racoon I encountered in the bush. The thing I like about the bolt's is that you never have to worry about them cycling cheap ammo. I like the 597 as well but for something I carry and don't shoot much the Steven's is my pick.
 
I've got the Remington 597 AAC-SD with a 16.5" standard barrrl and Volquartsen goodies.
No complaints on my end!
I do also love my bolt action but the semi is great for fast paced plinking!
 
Sounds like the best choice would be a trapper especially since he has Told you he likes the look of them. . The 22 mag version would give him some extra range. The new chiappa over under .22/410 would be pretty nice as well.
 
Tough call.

I love my 597! Bought used, and has served well. Full sized rifle, accurate, and affordable. 10rd magazine is very low profile.

Trapper I've only fired, and never owned. My experience was positive. I like long guns, and was surprised at how short this thing was. It's stock isn't tiny, and I looked through optics so barrel length was kind of irrelevant...except it is easy to swing. The weight being so centered between hands (esp with scope) was nifty.

Although both .22's, that's pretty much where similarity ends...bolt vs. semi, short vs. long(barrels), ammo choice (your 597 becomes a slick, straight pull with CB's) etc...has your Pop dropped a heavier hint on one, or the other? Are you going to borrow it?(lol-pick your fav then!) Is there a chance he'd buy the other fav on his own?
 
Thanks for the help guys. I was leaning towards the trapper and thats likely the direction i will go. There is no way he would buy either of them for himself , thats just the way her is. I was mostly concernes the throw would be too short as i assumed the shorter length was party due to the stock. Good to know thats not a real issue. Only problem is keeping me from shooting it before xmas. Although i have to take it out of the box to install a red dot. Hmmm, maybe inwillnejdnup with 2.

If you give the gift of a mounted scope, it should be true...
 
If he doesn't like "new" guns you could get an older cooey or lakefield model 64 here on the EE, which is the same as the new Savage 64's, so you can still find parts for them if you need something replaced.
