i'm wondering if the remington 597vtr is a good rimfire to get. i want it for backpacking and hiking. (mostly cause of coyotes. almost got attacked this year and some one else got attacked a month and a half later.) and any high cap mags for it? thanks

I was wondering the same when I starting to think about picking one up. I did a search of the board and found threads here people love em or hate em. Read through and see what you think, might help you decide, I am still on the fence.

I actually handled one at the Sportsman Show this year at Remington's booth. It is a cool looking piece of kit, had optics on it with a 30 round mag. I was going to buy one. They list at Ellwoods for 415CDN for the one with the collapsible stock

It's heavy! feels solid but don't know what it shoots like. Definately has "cool" factor when dressed up and would probably be a hoot to screw around with at the range.....

A solid rifle, maybe little muzzle heavy, but dependable, not what I would take hiking, a tad heavy, better choices out there.

597

I went through the crap of trying every box / colour /flavour of .22 until I tried blasers. It loves them , no stove pipes, no jams tons of fun & extreemly accurate.
ps. It acutaly likes balsers better than CCI'S .so much cheaper as well.

In Nova Scotia you cannot carry a centerfire or rimfire rifle in game habatat after the 31st of march.you are only allowed to carry a shotgun and use shot smaller than AAA.

Never shot one but held one at Can. Tire in Belleville. It was heavy and felt to be of excellent quality. I am probably going to buy one sooner or later.

hey lilham, I think the 597 is a great rifle. It may be a little picky about what you feed it, but it's balls on accurate. I chose the 10/22 because *IMO* it's more reliable than the 597... I have to say, the 597VTR does look nicer than the SR22.
peace...

When you take it apart to clean it. Those little allen head fillers that go in the back of the receiver just put them in finger tight then back them of just a hair that's what mine likes. Just so there touching the guide rails but not binding them.

Ditto, I use Blazer .22 in everything now, never had a misfire or stovepipe yet
