Just bought a used Remington 597 VTR for some cheap fun on the range. I wanted to disassemble and clean it prior to use, but am having some trouble.

Anybody able to talk me through field stripping the VTR? The standard 597 manual doesn't help at all. Not looking for a total tear down, but just to clean and lubricate the receiver assembly and housing assembly.

Cheers

It shows the dis-assembly for the standard 597, but the VTR configuration is totally different (side plates, front receiver and handblock, pistol grip, etc). Can't figure out how to get around the differences...

Take the side panels off, unscrew the hand guard, pull off the rubber ring. After that remove the grip, there should be another screw underneath that will let you lift the receiver out of the frame.

And it should look like this:

Thanks everyone.

Seems I overlooked the grip removal and hidden screw necessary to pull the receiver out.

Is there anyone out there that could tell me where I can get the 12 side panel screws for the 597 VTR.? I bought it used and only noticed later that they were stripped.

I got them from my LGS who ordered it from Remington. I do believe you can order them from the warranty center for Remington, but I did not go through with that. They are allen head screws.

I have watched my father and brother curse over that VTR several times.

The springs for a semi-auto 22 are not for fat-fingered people.

Good luck!
