Remington 597 VTR Reviews?

Hey Gang,

So, I am doing some online research re: the purchase of my first .22. I am leaning towards Remington's 597 VTR, (then Ruger's SR-22) but I have read alot of mixed reviews, mostly bad with regards to jamming etc. Now alot of these reviews are from a couple of years ago, so, has Remington improved over the years?

So...if there are any 597 VTR owners here, I would love to here some current reviews, good and bad. Ease of care, fit and finnish, accuracy, 25 rd magazine quality etc...

Note: the issues before were with the first two revisions of the magazine. They've fixed it with newer mags.

I send a lot of 597 vtr's out for warranty repair work and have never seen a sr22 come back with issues.

I worked in a gun shop and i had a couple come back within the first box of 50 rounds.Broken ejectors and extractors. Go for the Ruger SR 22 you won't be sorry.

VQ extractor's are cheap and have free shipping from rimfiresports.com
Also letz not get into Ruger and it's Q/C issues too please.

My extractor, spring and detent went missing about 50 rounds into the rifle after I bought it new in box.

Wasn't overly impressed... Ordered a vq extractor but still need the spring and detent... No idea where to get them. Tried to email for warrantee and they redirected me to someone else.

Anyone know the Remington supplier for Canada?

Also I would send them the rifle as it may have been the recall batch and it can be harry to re-install to.

mine has been flawless so far, only complaint is the 30 round remington mags. I have bought 4 so far, and only 1 has worked properly. The 10 round mag it comes works perfectly. Big advantage of the 597 VTR over any 10/22 or SR-22 is the hold open bolt after last cartridge feature. sure helps if you are trying to avoid dry firing it.

So even after the intial batch, the reviews still seem to be mixed. I tried a friends modded 10/22 and although it looked cool, jammed. So, it does happen across the board. hmmm, I wonder if a local dealer would do a 870 + 597 deal?
