This is my first rifle that my dad bought for me when I was a wee youngin and it's going on 16 years old. It has been sitting in the safe neglected for some time now and tinkering with my other rimfires re-kindled some interest in it. I replaced the red dot sight with a leupold vx-1 3-9x, gave it an aluminum tape bedding job and sanded out the barrel channel to free float it. Range results did not inspire me to keep shooting it so back in the safe it went. When I got my borescope I of course had to inspect the barrel and no surprise it was very fouled. I had always cleaned it after a session with hoppes #9 and a bronze brush but a carbon ring had also formed despite this. I gave it a cleaning with JB bore paste and had it shining like new! This also reveled nasty imperfections in the barrel  Back out with it and groups greatly improved. Out again and groups got even better, such improvement I'm entertaining the idea it could complete the 1/2" challenge! 1000 monkeys on 1000 typewriters kinda theory shoot it enough and it should put together 5 in a row for the challenge. 5/20 5 shot groups were better than 1/2", 4/20 were just above 1/2". Not bad at all for the old gal with a 9x scope and 5.5# trigger! I've swapped out the 9x scope for an 18x while I attempt the challenge now so we'll see what happens. I should also add as a youngster I also cleaned it from the muzzle end with a two piece aluminum rod, oh ignorance! Didn't do too much harm though.

Yep it will be tough, I see the barrel is overall capable of it the imperfections (tool marks) will just need to fill in with fouling and find a happy place so it doesn't have so much random vertical spread. As for seeing a run on them lol to that I say "They don't make em like they used to!" I don't believe the laminate stock or stainless steel barrel are offered anymore :( all tupperware. Still a better buy as a stock rifle than a 10/22 imho. The 597 challenge on RFC is 4 groups and the average must be under 1/2" allowing one over so I can see getting that done.

My Rem 597 HB has no problem shooting under 1/2" with CCI mini-mags any day...

My CZ can do it with it slung over my shoulder and using a hand held mirror to see through the scope and the target down range too.

Shouldnt it be all about the challenge and the fun of just spending some time outdoors or a the range rather than seeing who can wee the farthest ??

I'll still take my CZ to the gopher patch any day , but if all I have is a single shot CIL ...then so be it ;)

Tight Groups,
Rob

Wasn't a pissing match, was just stating these rifles are indeed capable of it, not sure why so many seem to disagree or have a hate on for these rifles. Oh right, they are just mad cuz they paid 3x as much or more for their 10/22 that doesn't shoot any better... I HAD a ruger 10/22, it wouldn't shoot worth crap, my Rem 597 outshot it no problem so sold the Ruger. As always though different people have different experiences with different rifles, that was just mine. Also, never had a single jam, FTF, or FTE or malfunction of any kind in my Rem 597 ever... My Ruger was very picky on ammo, haven't had as much issues with the 597 ammo wise. Not a Remington lover by any means either, in fact, I actually generally tend to hate them, especially the Rem 700s and their crap quality control now a days. Anyways, just my experiences.

Will it make the 1/2 " challenge. Not likely, that is 25 shots all in 1/2 " with no flyers. I have a 597 Yellowjacket that has came close but not there yet. You may be a better shot than me. A new trigger and extractor set has helped a lot. have tried many brands of ammo but still have a couple of more $$ boxes to try. Good luck-enjoy.

I'm sorry my attempt at humor was lost this fine Friday Morning...
The only time I had any issue with a .22 was when I had a Remington Viper and it failed to digest Remington Yellow Jackets.
American Eagle aka Federal ammo on the other hand would run flawlessly !
Time for that Porter House Steak now and med. rare too ;)

I'm with ya! Mines gotten damn close. Couple of weeks ago I shot a 1.1" group at 100 yards and that's with the AR Tactical rounds. Once I get my hands on some decent standard velocity rounds (showed real promise, but I had very little of it) I'm going to try the challenge..

My Rem 597 HB has no problem shooting under 1/2" with CCI mini-mags any day...

Try it!

If you don't get it, then try it again!

Rinse and repeat.

A day at the range is a hell of a lot better than a day at the dentist. Usually cheaper too!!

I'll give it a go with my wife's 597 HB. I just did a VQ extractor and hammer on it.

I highly doubt it. It's not easy to get 5 groups all under even with a real BR rifle. I find there are so many variables that can screw up a good group even on a match rifle. Last week it was warm out and my Annie was having not liking it and rewarding me with crappie groups.A 597 stock semi not going to happen.

I don't know if it can do 1/2" groups at 50 yards.
I know my stock 597 with a set of tech sights and bulk ammo prints impressive groups even at 100 meters. I have found it to be one of the most accurate semi auto stock .22's I've ever owned. Even the stock irons are better than most others. With a set of tech sights on it, it's an incredibly impressive rifle for accuracy I have found.
I sold my 10/22's shortly after buying it.
I may try a scope on her one day but it's accurate enough just with the upgraded sights. Scope would weigh more than the rifle lol

Rabid , you go for it !

I have a 597 HB 20 in , in the plastic stock , free floated the barrel .

Last week was it's first time out to the range, still testing different ammo but at 50 yards the average was about 3/4 inch per 10 shot group was the norm with Winchester super X .

I too might give the challenge a go If I find the right ammo . I have no good target ammo and none to be found locally ..........

I tried the Rem Target , It shot ok but the ammo did not impress me at all.

Remember , if you don't try , you will never know , best of luck !!
