Remington 597, will it make the 1/2" challenge?

I've had to order "the good ammo" I wanted to try local shops never carry anything above RWS club and target rifle.

Well I was planning a range day today it is perfect out warm and no wind unfortunately life took a hard twist last night. My dog got hit by a truck and I spent the morning in the emergency vet clinic. The good news is there was no evidence of a fracture on the x-rays or signs of internal injuries. Last night he was limping on 3 legs this morning he would not put both rear legs down and was walking on his fronts. He'll be in pain for awhile but should recover 100%. What a scary experience how life can change in an instant. The drivers reaction to slam the brakes and swerve saved my dog.

OMG Rabid , I am so sorry that your dog got hurt , I hope he has a full recovery in record time , hate to see an animal suffer .

I would be beside my self if my dog got hit by a car ,,,,,,,

I am sure you are giving him the best care , shooting can wait ,,, their like our kids .

All the best wishes for you , your family and you beloved dog !

Thanks for the kind wishes. I've been a wreck all day. Even though I know he's going to be ok this still sucks big time. He's only 16 months old with a good long life to live yet. The sweetest dog you could ever ask for. Smart as a whip and humorously mischievous! Poor fella has been conked out all day doesn't want to eat or drink.

Yes I hope for a speedy recovery.I have a similar situation as both my father in law and my step father are in hospital and hospice .unfortunately when we get older these old boy's loose their health.Take it easy and pamper your pooch.

Gunner sends his best wishes and ' Get well soon ! "

Thanks guys! Barley was a little more mobile today using 3 legs to limp around just holding up the side he got hit on. Poor guy keeps trying to pee with a lifted leg and stumbles over. Just pee like a girl I tell him!

Elimsprint - that pic is awesome! Such happy pooches calandar worthy, seriously! :D

Hightrail - gunner is adorable :) how old now?

Wasn't a pissing match, was just stating these rifles are indeed capable of it, not sure why so many seem to disagree or have a hate on for these rifles. Oh right, they are just mad cuz they paid 3x as much or more for their 10/22 that doesn't shoot any better... I HAD a ruger 10/22, it wouldn't shoot worth crap, my Rem 597 outshot it no problem so sold the Ruger. As always though different people have different experiences with different rifles, that was just mine. Also, never had a single jam, FTF, or FTE or malfunction of any kind in my Rem 597 ever... My Ruger was very picky on ammo, haven't had as much issues with the 597 ammo wise. Not a Remington lover by any means either, in fact, I actually generally tend to hate them, especially the Rem 700s and their crap quality control now a days. Anyways, just my experiences.

A lot of insecurities in this post. It's OK fella, us 10-22 lovers are just jelly of your sweet 597. Until I read this I never realized how bad I got ripped off.

The 597 HB 20 inch I have runs like a top , it did come with the 3d Generation mag , the Gen 1's and 2's apparently did not work very well , I do not have first hand knowledge of this , just what I have read .
Some people refer to this as growing pains that often happen with a completely new design but I don't believe that the manufacture should allow a product to be sold until it is perfected , not good for the reputation of the item .

The other issue was the FTF and FTE this was caused by someone over tightening the screw / bracket that holds the two bolt guide rods in place , over tightening causes the guide rods to bend out of a lineament , when the bolt travels back to eject a round , the two Bolt guide rods no longer flex and are not straight causing the rods to bind on the inside of the bolt channel , thus preventing proper travel of the bolt to eject and or feed the next round .

These were the two main issues with the 597 that I know of . Gen 3 mags and proper screw tension on the guide rods bracket solves these problems .

There are far fewer after market parts for the 597 compared to the 10-22 .

The 10-22 is an excellent rifle , no question .

But as with all things issues do arise , my buddy bougth 2 take 10-22 down models , bouth had improperly installed sights , so bad he returned both as they could not be repaired , He still owns 3 standard 10-22's and loves them all.

Here again is an example of a problem with a 10-22

So even with top quality after market parts issues remain .

I believe both are excellent rifle platforms but issues can arise , for the most part both are well made and have No problems right out of the box .

It often comes down to what we like and what we can shoot the best , or if we want to do extensive mods well the 10-22 is the way to go .

Enjoy what ever you like to shoots and stay safe !!!

I've got the old gen plastic mags and yeah 6 or 7 rounds is the max that can be loaded in them before they stick and don't feed. I just load 5 for 5 shot groups and it works fine that way. I got 2 new gen metal mags and you can load the full 10. Recently got the 30 round mag and that was sticking like crazy until it got under 25 rounds so that was the only time I used it since it doesn't fit on the bench rest rig. That aside it's pretty reliable cycling. I find it to be the better stock rifle out of the box but if modding is your thing then the 10/22 is your platform.

I finally found a source for vq hammer and extractor so I ordered those up, be nice to lighten up the trigger. Considering I was doing good to get 1" groups prior to borescope and cleaning I'm thrilled to see the target results I got and will enjoy seeing just how dialed in I can get it!

Hi Rabid

Just wondering where you found a vq hammer and extractor for the 597 ?

Has any one tried the ProMag Remington 597 Magazine, .22 LR, 22 Round, Polymer Black ?

Bullseye has them in stock and I was wondering how well they worked ....
