Ok now that I'm in the right place....I value any opinion on the 597. I saw one in Red Deer for 199.00 new in box...deal...good rifle or what....thought about taking it over a 10/22 pricewise...good?/bad?

Let'er rip.....

All depends what you want out of it. Keep it stock and shoot the #### out of it with 10 round mags, or mod it/high cap mags/better stock/etc.
There still isn't alot of aftermarket stuff for the 597.

Yeah....if they make hi cap mags for it I would buy it ...the guy didn't know. I will buy a Ruger if I have to but I was just looking for a cheaper option for the praire dogs....when the snow is gone!

I had a 10/22 - did a few mods (auto bolt release, mag release extension, trigger). It was fun to shoot but I wanted better accuracy. It was shooting about 1-inch groups (or bigger) at 50 yds. I tried about 20 different types of 22 ammo too. Crap accuracy so, I sold it.

I tried out a couple other semi-auto 22's but they produced the same or worse results.

After more than a year of screwing around buying and trying 22's, I purchased a new 597 - Oh Joy!!!!

It shoots ragged little one-hole 10-shot groups at 50yds - AWESOME. (It's not Anschutz accuracy but pretty close for 1/5 the cost).

I did put a VQ hammer and extractor in it to improve the trigger and extraction (although it was fine before adding extractor).

I really like it! I have one with the Remington factory black stock (not the gray one). It looks cool and handles great and is seriously accurate with mini-mags.

10/22 ? - never again

I'm a converted 597 believer !!!

Good Luck!

I have heavy barreled 597 with laminate yellow stock on it. It wasn't cheap to buy the package (535$) but it has everything I ever wanted on it. Very ergonomic, accurate and reliable semi. Best rifle in my collection. I am sure you can buy comparable target variant of 1022 if you shop carefully. I would take 597 ahead of 1022 cuz 597 is far superior overall design.

I just recall RimfireSports not expressing much faith in the Eagle mags. It's a shame - I would have bought a lightly-used 597 at $140 if there were high-caps....

I'd recommend the 597.Mine had a few burps and hiccups when I first got it,but runs like a well oiled machine now.I forget who makes the 30 round mag,but it can be fussy,so load carefully.I'd avoid remington ammo though......

I love my 597. Needed a little tweeking at first, but not a big deal. I use rem golden bullet bulk ammo and have not had any issue with it.
