Remington 597

???? if I know why my 597 doesnt like it!Thunderbolts and cyclones??seem very inconsistant. You really notice the sound from shot to shot with your hearing protection on,too. Not so great grouping.I dunno if its underpowered for cycling the bolt or what. All I know is,when I used that ammo, she didnt run so good.I havent tried the high velocity stuff, now that I think of it....maybe I'll give it a try.....

CNADN... did you re finish your stock? the sites list a grey stock and yours looks more black than grey...

Some of the 597s came with a black stock, but I think only certain stores got them. Send a PM to Sniper22, he might be able to tell you who has them. I got my stock used. Sniper22 changed to a custom made laminate stock (which he made himself), so I bought his black one from him. My original one was grey.

Okay, I'm genuinely interested - where did you get the mag, and how does it work?

I got the black (smoke) mag from hawktech arms or rimfire sports, I can't remember which one at the moment. They both had them for sale. I also got 2 clear ones from Sniper22. You could send him a PM. When I first used them they fed without any problems. However, I noticed that after a while (150+ rounds) they had a problem feeding, but I think that was because they were getting a build up if powder around the top. I have not had a chance to shoot them since I cleaned them.

I'm like 99% sure my next plinker/gopher getter is going to be a Remy 597 in 17HMR. Just not sure if I want to go HB with the laminated stock or go the plastic fantastic route. Thoughts on the 2?

Russell's in Calgary has a big whack of Remington branded 30 round mags in the wall/shelf as of about 3 hours ago. Clear plastic only, no black that I saw. I haven't yet researched who makes them or what their reputation is. $19.99 iirc.

According to the rimfirecentral crew, or at least some posters, the cheap skinny barrel version is the best bet as the heavy barrel versions are not OVERALL as accurate - that is, I'm sure some are great but some definitely aren't.

Excellent guns. VERY accurate out of the box, and reliable too (despite some rumors going around). They gained a bad reputation for feeding/extracting problems that were present in early models, but thats no longer the case. New 597's are just as reliable as 10/22 with the right ammo (it IS picky on ammo). I probably have over 3000 rounds through mine, and i NEVER had a FTF or FTE problem that wasnt caused by bad ammo. I once shot over 500 rounds through it without cleaning and it still functioned flawlessly. Mine works best with CCI Minimags.

After a very good experience with an early stainless/hardwood 597 in .22, I got a laminated-stock one in HMR. No sights, semi-heavy barrel, scope base. I had high hopes and expectations for it, but, wow, did it ever turn out to be a dog. Poor accuracy with every available load (about a year ago), and an extremely poor trigger. Functioning, like my original .22, was always perfect if the gun was kept clean.

The stock in laminate was WAY nicer looking and feeling than the synthetic versions that I handled.

597's appear to have a bit too gentle firing pin to reliably ignite remington line of rimfire ammo for their known poor ignition quality. I agree it is ironic. Thunderbolts may work fine (comparatively) in older Cooey wher firing pin chops rims like a chiesel.

+1 for getting a 597.

If you want all kinds of tacti-cool nonsense, grab a 10/22.

If you want a plane-jane rifle that will out shoot a 10/22 or just about any other semi-auto .22 out of the box, get a 597.

I've shot about 500 rounds out of mine so far, and my 597 likes the CCI Blazers best for both accuracy and reliability. CCI Velocitors and sub-sonics all function flawlessly as well.

The only thing you need to do with a 597 is make sure the bolt rail guide screws aren't too tight.

i have one it loves stinngers and it works good with them i love the impact promance of the remington yello jackets shooitng in to peat the leave bigg lles 5 inches across how ever in one box of 50 i've had 5 duds which did not impress me

the remington sub sonics are a bit better have to finish shooting through them

cci sub sonics work well mini mags i have some amarican eagle stuff i should shoot through to see if it will eat it

if the yellow jackets worked they lickly would be my go to for hunting fox at close range bit nasty for rabbit waiting on a buddy in the florensices department at the local collage to get me the recipy for ballistics gell so any one near durham who is intrested in taking part in a rim fire ammo study let me know

also one thing i found with the remington ammo it stove pipes afair bit
