Bought myself a new Remington 597 22LR for Chistmas and took it to the range today. After fine tuning the scope and 'bout 100 rnds, the best group I could manage @ 50yds. was about 1"-1 &1/2".I was shooting Winchester 36gr. HP from Cabela's in the 333rnd. box. Does anyone own one of these and do they seem inherantly innaccurate or maybe it's the ammo? I'm pretty sure I can shoot better than that. Or is it common to get groups like that with a semi-auto 22?
 
I've heard bad stories about the 597's. Try different brands and types of ammo. You'll probably find what your gun likes best after trying a bunch. A semi is a semi, it's not gonna be real accurate. Other's will chime in and answer the question about the grouping that you are getting.
 
597's are usually very accurate but cycling can be not so reliable.
Try some other ammo.
My 22mag 597 will do 1/2" groups at 50 yards.
 
Best thing you can do is go right back to the shop you bought it from and ask to exchange it for a 10/22.

I bought my 597 as an impulse buy. 500 rounds later I had nothing good to say about it. failure to feed, fire, eject, terrible magazines.. do yourself a favor OP and get rid of the thing!
 
I have a 597 and at 50 yards I can generally get groups of less than 1" with CCI Blazer. I tried Winchester, Federal Bulk, CCI, Remington ammo with it. I never had any stovepipe issues or misfeed unless I was using CCI blazer bulk packs because they put some sort of wax on the ones they pack loose. It tends to gum up my extractor. I never understood the bad rep it has, I know people have bad things to say about it but it was my first rifle and always works great for me.

Other than that never had a problem

I say try some new ammo.
 
I won't be getting rid of it, but There's probably a 10-22 in my future. Meantime, I'm gonna try some different ammo. What do you other members recommend for 22 LR ammo for semi-autos? I'm meticulous about keeping my guns clean and lubed.
 
I tried a bunch of ammo in my .22 semi and CCI Mini Mags (40 grain) worked best. The bulk type ammo gave me constant issues with FTF and FTE. Groups were also tighter, less powder fouling, and you can definitely feel more recoil than other ammo. I would buy a different bunch of small packs of ammo until you see what your rifle likes and stock up on that brand.

I like winchester 555 36g, 1295fps,hollow point , copper plated (washed)
they fire as well as can be expected from my semi-auto marlin 795, whenever i have a failure to fire i run that round through my henry lever and the round usually fires.
Probably 10k of these fired and only a very small handfull of duds.
 
I'm averse to Remingtons generally, even their models that are very good (e.g. 870, 700) but lots of people like them. Most guns do better with certain ammunition than with other, so it is probably worth buying a variety and testing it. You might find something not too uncommon that works really well and be very happy with that gun. But for the best chance of co-operation from the seller in case you do end up wanting to return it or trade it in, don't delay, don't shoot more of any one ammo than you need to test it, and clean it well.

I'm very content with my Marlin 795. Most people speak well of the Ruger 10/22, but for me that's not worth the extra money.
 
I have the 597 VTR, thing is a tack driver....Both it and my Savage Mk2 sport 3x9 scopes and the 597 will shoot just as good as the Savage up to 100 yards...havent really tried longer than that.

I do have stovepipes with the stock ejector...buddys trying to get us both aftermarket ejectors that should solve the issue
 
I run cci velociters in mine. Had it to a local shop and they actually did a bunch of test shooting for me. It was great as they supplied all the ammo. Determined velociters ran the best through mine. I have 2 597's and a 10/22. The 10/22 is for the range as got a fancy distributor exclusive with a really nice stock, while the 597's are for pest control on the farm and get beat on a bit harder.
 
I once had to sight one of these at 50, I used bulk Remington Golden Bullets, the ones that are a brass-looking colour and leave flakes on your hands after handing them, and I decided it was sighted when I could put 3 shots into a staple from on a rest. I've since had the chance to fire it again with a 30-round mag, and all 30 went into the lower half of a 1" target patch, same ammo. Don't use cheap Winchester, it hates Wildcats especially, use cheap Remington. Federal works fine too.
 
Havent shot my new one much yet, but I wanted to pipe in... The scope that came with mine (3-9x) is crap, at low power it is fine, anything over 4x and its blurry. They shouldnt have bothered.
