Remington 597

I fire sub sonic ammo in mine all the time. I'm left handed and I can hold the charging handle closed with my off hand while I shoot and just cycle it manually.

I've had several 597's, all of them reliable and accurate. Just make sure the guide rails are not tight. Pull the action from the stock and back off the two set screws at the rear of the receiver. This allows the bolt to cycle more smoothly. The set screws won't go anywhere as they are captured by the stock.

I won't be getting rid of it, but There's probably a 10-22 in my future. Meantime, I'm gonna try some different ammo. What do you other members recommend for 22 LR ammo for semi-autos? I'm meticulous about keeping my guns clean and lubed.

I would keep the 597 or get a marlin semi. I did that 10/22 thing and minute of pop can wasnt what I was looking for. I have a marlin mod 60 now and it shoots right around .5" at 50 yards with mini mags.

I have a 597 Yellow Jacket, it shoots mini mags very well - 1/2 to 3/4 at 50 (if I do my part). I replaced the hammer & reduced trigger pull by 1/2 :). Take your time & play with it, it shoots way better than my 10-22.
