Remington 597

There are lots of threads about these 2 firearms. They both seem good but it looks like the ruger wins. I actually fired a clip of ammo out of a 597 a few hours ago. Mh neighborhood just got one. He loves it and it felt really good too. I never fired. A ruger tho so I can't compare. Ruger definitely wins for aftermarket parts tho.

I have the 597 it's a good gun very accurate but if you are planning on going with the archangel kit I would get the scoped model for its barrel without the iron sight screwed into the end only because I think that the plastic flash hider with bayonet lug is stupid & you have to use it or the front blade sight with the archangel... I'd rather just have a straight barrel.

Another point the 30 round mags are difficult to load and do not always feed reliably the 10 round mags work decently though lately I have had problems getting the ten round mags stay engaged when full ...

I hate to be one of those guys but if you can find a good deal on a 10-22 and tactical it up you would not be disappointed. That said Remington is a good gun certainly has limited options compared to the ruger but it has some which is more that you can say for most.

All said we have the 597 the mossberg flattop and a SR22. The sr22 is the all around favorite and the Remy is a close 2nd and the mossberg is out for warranty...

I had a 597 in 17 HMR. It was super accurate but not much available for aftermarket parts. If you plan on keeping it stock I guess it wouldn't matter much, but my money would be on the 10/22. Lots of aftermarket goodies, proven design. Check on the info on the 597 recall of the 17 HMR before you spend your money on one.

I have the vtr and love it. It's reliable and accurate. It's completely stock with the A2 stock. Ran over 300 rounds through it yesterday without a single problem. I will agree that there isn't a much available for the 597 aftermarket, but atleast the firearm is available! If not the vtr I would recommend the 597 HB. A friend of mine just pick one up and put it in the archangel stock. Looks awesome. But at the end of the day it's your gun and what ever floats you boat.

I have the 597 HB, very accurate. The 10-rd magazine is good. But I have some minor feeding issues with the 30 rounder. LRHO feature is hit-and-miss with the 30 rounder. I am looking to test a Promag 22 rounder if I can get one. I just installed an Archangel 556 stock and it looks better now. With a cheapo Tasco Red Dot to which I am planning to replace with a 3-9 X 40 scope with quick release mounts, I am satisfied with the 1" grouping I am getting @ 20 m standing position. One hole is possible when bench rested or with a bipod. Before you buy, make sure you are comfortable with the weight. A regular 597 is lighter compared to the 597 HB. Recommended upgrades: VQ hammer, Extractor and springs.

I have a friebd that owns two, one for him and his fiance. They jam every five shots. I thinks its a combination of him never cleaning them and possibly the mags

I have had a 597 for a while now really like it, I have been contemplating the archangel stock what do you think of it? Specifically how is the feel and weight and overall quality?

I have a 597 with the archangel stock and its great never had any problems with it or the magazine. my remington 30 round magazine works great too as long as you load them to 25. The archangel stock is really nice and solid and gives it a much better look and feel. But the takedown is not fun i think its 9 screws or different sizes. The last shot hold open is a nice feature the 10/22 doesn't have as well as the dual guide rods. Don't over tighten them or you may have malfunctions. I tighten hand tight and then back off half a turn. Archangel stock and scope and 30 round mag are all the aftermarket parts you need for a cheap .22.

Got the 597 for my brother in law at Christmas. Seems like a good, accurate gun. My uncle also has the 22 mag version. I've heard some people say it's finicky with ammo but we were shooting various cheap bulk without issue. There's definitely a bigger aftermarket for the 10/22 if you're looking to do a lot of modifying. It's a great gun too, I don't think you could really go wrong either way.

I have a 597 aswell great gun at 100 yards I was getting around a toonie sized grouping most of the time. Pretty accurate for a cheap gun if you ask me!

Great gun. Got one recently even tho I heard alot of people having problems with it...misfires, ftf etc. Out of the 300 rounds I shot I only had 2 misfires, no ftf. I was also using different 500 packs of winchester, federal, thunderbolts. All worked GREAT. GREAT gun for $150.
