Remington 660 question

I am in the process of aquiring a Remington 660 (about 1969 vintage) and have come to realize there was a recall on that action as well as the 600 mohawk in 1979. Apparently there is an issue with the safety and trigger wear that could cause an AD. Anyone out there ever service one of these rifles and know how big an issue this is? Anyone able to comment on their accuracy or performance? Its in .222...thanks:)

Mine is a .308 in about a 1975 model. I still have the original trigger and have had no problem with it. The barrel is quite stiff due to being a thicker profile than many hunting rifles. I find mine shoots very well. I can't really give you meaningful group sizes because I use either a Weaver Foolproof aperature sight or a low powered scope (currently a 3x). I can easily shoot 1.5" groups with the peep or 3x scope sights at 100 yds.

If side of trigger has a triangle mark on it then it has new and improved parts in it (I think).
I own 660 in 222, accurate little thing but I can't shoot tiny groups with it,
it's so lite I find it difficult to hold steady. My teenage daughter does much better with it.

Dilly,

Here is some info from Remington's website. The link for the entire recall info is here.

How can you tell if your Model 600 or 660 rifle was subject to the 1979 recall, and whether it was repaired as part of that program?

• Model 600 and 660 rifles - except those with a serial number beginning with an "A" before the serial number - were subject to the 1979 recall.

• Each Model 600 and 660 rifles repaired under the 1979 recall has a “V” (approximately 1/4 inch high) stamped on the left side of the trigger below the receiver line. These replacement trigger assemblies included the bolt-lock feature.

Thanks everybody for the info. My 660 does not have an A in the serial number and it does not have the V stamp, so I guess I will contact remington.

I am hoping to get it out tomorrow and see how it shoots. It has a bipod on it so that should help with the steadyness. It also has a 3-9 scope so I took off the iron sights...man it looks short with the sights off and the bipod out!

Wiser, I see you have a few...have you had them in for the recall?

Dilly,

No, I have never done the recall thing. I've never lived close enough to a Remington certified smith to make it worth my while. Some day I'll haul a bunch in.

If you don't buy the 222, I'd appreciate a PM with a bit of info......

I did buy it...sorry

Thanks for your help though...if I hear tell of another one I will let you know. My Dad had one of these in the 60's (a mohawk) in 222 and sold it a long time ago and always lamented that he never should have sold it...he tried to buy it back from the owner a couple years ago but the guy was asking huge money for it...when I saw this one I jumped on it. I hope its a good shooter!

While one of these can go years without an AD, the trigger/safety design is inherently flawed. Without too much effort, I have been able to duplicate the AD scenario with 3 of my 600/660 rifles. It does not "go" every time, about 1/10, but that is way too dangerous. The "fix" isn't perfect, one of my rifles has the "improved" stamp on the trigger and will still pop off when conditions are right.

Do a Google on this issue, at least one of the lawsuits that Remington lost in the US is almost unbelievable in describing the behavior of the owner, but not so funny when he wound up shooting his mother.

Thnks for the info OB...can you describe the condition in which the AD could occur...is there a way of testing mine to check if it is prone to this?

I did buy it...sorry

No need to apologise. Good choice in a quick handling gun. The only 600/660 I've EVER heard of that didn't shoot very well was one with a totally shot out barrel. I'm sure yours will shoot great.

If you do feel guilty about buying it instead of me, you could placate me by posting some pics of your new rig. :D I love looking at those little stinkers.

Enjoy your new smoke pole. You made a fine choice in my opinion.

I like this little stinker so much...here are a couple pics!

I cleaned it up a bit because I think it had probably sat for years (the oil had varnished a bit in spots) but the bore was clean as a whip. I took off the sights and changed the swivels to studs to accomodate the bipod...and I jewelled the bolt for s**ts and giggles

I went out on Sunday, threw a couple targets up on a hay bale and ranged out 100 yds. Belly down in the snow with a fairly stiff wind, above is my second 3 shot group. I can't wait to see what it'll do at the range off a bench. Its gonna be a coyote / coon / groundhog rifle.

I love the 600/660's!! I have a Rem 600 .308 and use it for all my big game, it performs fantastically and is a joy to lug around the woods. I can't bring myself to buy another rifle for fear I'll never use it....so instead, I buy scatterguns like there's no tomorrow!!

I'd like to get my hands on a Rem 600 in .350, anyone sellin??
