I was at work the other day and a guy came in looking to get the trigger lock removed from his rifle because he lost the keys. Being the gunnut I am I of course looked it over. It was a Remington 660 in .30-06. You could tell it was old but it looked almost brand new. He said his grandfather gave it to him. I have no experience with them and I was wondering if anyone has one and can tell me more about them. It had an old looking scope that had leather scope caps (also something I have not seen) He's looking to sell it for $400 just not sure what it's actually worth.

Maybe, I'm not 100% but I thought it said .30-06 on the barrel. I have his number at work, I'll call him tomorrow to get more info. I told him I was possibly interested just needed to do more research first.

I see Remington only ran them for 3 years.. are they the 710's of the late 1960's?

Not in the least!! The 600/660 Series Remingtons were quality stuff.
Some didn't like the dogleg bolt handle, and the bolt release is hokey.
But they were solid, well made [and accurate] rifles. Very handy to carry, too.
I have a 6br built on a 600 action, and it is a zinger.
Regards, Eagleye.

It felt solid and well made. Fit and finish were nice. But not many things today are made like they were "back then" especially Remingtons. Yeah.. I said it.. :p

Is $400 a good price for a mint condition 660?

400.00 is a steal. They made them in 308, 6mm, .243, 6.5 Rem Mag and 350 Rem Mag. No 30-06, although either .223 or .222 or both were made.(not sure)

Bolt stop is silly but I have owned 4 over the years and still have three of them. All shot sub Moa. Remington had a recall on the triggers. They still honor the warranty if your 660 needs this.

The recall is not actually on the trigger .the recall is to remove the bolt lock down feature so that the action can be cycled with the safety on for unloading the rifle.and yes $ 400.00 is a steal .and it was 222 rem 6mm rem 243 win and 308.the magnum version is 6.5 rem mag and 350 rem mag.

600's had 18" barrels if memory serves, with a vent rib on top. 660's had a thicker barrel that was 20" long, no rib. Calibers were 222, 223, 244/6mm Rem, 243, 308, 6.5 Rem Mag and 350 Rem Mag. Had a 600 in 350 for a while, quite the little cannon. It may also have been available in 222 Rem Mag, I seem to recall seeing that in a gun catalog a long, long time ago. There was also a Mohawk, which was a low rent version of the 600/660 without the laminate stock (and sold through places like Walmart, oddly enough). Good rifles, same basic action as the Rem XP100 bolt action pistol. - dan

I have the last iteration of the 600 series rifles, being the 673 in .350 Rem Mag laminate (22"barrel). Mine is clearly based on the Model 7, but retains the vent rib (metal on this model, not the plastic one) and the shark fin. The open sites on mine are junk, but I use a low power scope anyway. Shoots like blazes and is a definite keeper. I have shot them all and I like the 673 best. It listed for $1,200 new. If you don't buy the 660 at that price you must offer it to me. I only wish I had a matching rifle in 6mm Rem Mag. :)

Thanks for all the info guys but I lost out on the deal. He ended up selling it to a family member. I won't hesitate if there's a next time. On the upside I've got an extra 400 bux burning a hole in my pocket lol what's next...

I just saw a 660 today in a little backwoods sporting goods store, appeared to be in excellent condition asking $550 it was in 222 Rem. They also had a Win 100 in 284. Seriously considered both but bought neither............................YET!!
