Remington 700 17 Rem

I had one as well, and to clean 'er I removed the bolt and stood it, muzzle down, into a small stainless steel pan and leaned the rifle into a corner. I then carefully gave it a shot of Wipe Out into the bore until I could just see it foaming up into the chamber. (Keep a kleenex ready to prevent the stuff going past the chamber mouth.)

I then let it sit overnight and then cleaned 'er in the morning with patches only. First a dry patch or two, then one with a bit of Wipe Out on it. I'd just keep pushing lightly moistened(With Wipe Out) patches through until they came out clean.

Push them straight through from breech to past the muzzle with out going back and forth. No need to finish with a dry one as Wipe Out leaves a protective film in the bore.:)

Crikey Dennis, ya coulda had my last one, but some lucky guy out 'Berta way scooped er.:)

I'll get another .17 in a while, but I'm kinda leaning toward a .17 Hornet or Fireball.
Decisions....decisions.;)

Hey Guntech how can I clean the bore, with no 17 rod or brushes...I have JB Bore cleaner, Hoppes 9,and lots of good rods etc but 22 is smallest. I tried to PM you to give my Email for picks, but your PM Box is full. deerdr@nbcsmail.com. Jim

I'm a long drive to a small Gunshop, that "might" have 17 call stuff. Anyway I got some 50# test fishing line, put a loop on one end! fed it through breech! put some J.B. Bore cleaner on a 22 cal patch....one wayed it breech to muzzle several times, switched to Hoppes #9, then G96 Last few passes.. It wasn't really dirty, I think it was well lubricated, before storage, and was just dust....it's beautiful now....wow 17 is small. The Scope on it is a Lyman All American, 6X. The other guns in the package were a Browning 78 in 6mm Rem Mint, with a Redfield 12x with a 3rd turret for parallax....and finally, a BRNO, Rebarreled in 257 Improved, with a beautiful custom Walnut Stock It has a Weaver 12X, a vintage scope, but crystal clear....

Speaking of full in-boxes, JIM YOUR E-MAIL IN-BOX IS FULL.............

and I already told you how to clean that rig, glad you figured it out!

In the meantime please see my e-mail about an extractor for a Savage 340D in .222, I need one!

Doug

The rem 700 Had a mid profile barrel, 17 Rem, in as new Condition...it was made June 71...the first year the 17 Rem was available...Anyway it's gone, and we have a VERY Happy Nutter. Thanks for all the Help, and 17 is a very small hole.

I've heard the 17 Rem can require fastidious cleaning, but if you have good habits in that regard now, shouldn't be an issue. Don't own a 17 yet, but I love the small centerfires, and would definitely like to go there eventually. Congrats on your find!

Emergency rod - Get a 1/8 inch brass rod from a welding shop. Carefully push a patch through. Then buy a good rod.

I will not use a pull through on anything. I have seen too many jam or break and then it is a real headache in a small bore.

My favorite 17 (17 Rem AI) was on a small Sako with a heavy stainless Shilen barrel... fouling was not a problem. It always shot under 1/2 inch, usually in the .3's and I cleaned it every 40 or 50 rounds.
