I do appreciate the advice.
But I reserve the right not to take it, when it doesn't seem appropriate to me.
Perhaps it would be more accurate to say I value the experience and the correct thinking, and I probably even agree with the advice. I'll use some of it to shape my thoughts in the longer term future.

i recommend you ... actually handle and look through the scopes you are interested in before you spend
That was probably the most useful piece of advice in the thread, and ironically the one that I was trying to avoid. I'm a big internet shopper. Nevertheless it got me off my butt and driving 200km around looking through the scopes -- which were the only thing I wasn't pretty sure about.
The rifle is purchased. It came with the limbsaver. I am happy with the purchase. This not a tool for a business. It's a hobby. One of several. For me, in this case, it doesn't have to be cost effective. I have not yet purchased the scope.
Shooting gophers with a 30-06? wow must have some deep pockets to feed that caliber.
I doubt ammunition is going to be a problem. If I put 50 rounds through it per year I'll be surprised.
Next 30-06 sporter barrel on gophers 3 shots and your not going to hit anything until you wait for your barrel to cool down.
As I recall, ground hogs would stand in groups of 3 to 5, perched by their holes. We'd lay down in the dirt in the trees, 150m to 350m away, put the rifles on the sandbags, and line them up talking quietly to coordinate. With the first simultanious shot the others would dart underground. Two rifles, one per person, two dead groundhogs. We went to confirm their demise -- and you're right a 30-06 hollowpoint does kill a groundhog rather thorougly and instantly. Then we'd walk a few fields over. Barrels were long since cool by then.
At the range, 20 years ago, it only took a few rounds for my shoulder to get sore. I weighed a lot less then too, and wasn't nearly as strong. I'm hoping to be a 3am range shooter, once every other month or so.
I doubt I'll be going deer hunting, but the deer hunters I know often go out with only one bullet.
This is the wrong caliber for rifle night at the semi-local range. (an ongoing weekly competition). If I decide to pursue that, I'll need a corresponding rifle. But for that, I hope people will let me try their's, there.
