Most of my shooting has been 12 gauge shotguns. Recently, I have taken an interest in .30-06 rifles and have been looking around for a good starter rifle.

My first lesson - and surprise - was that most of these rifles have no sights and the norm seems to use a scope. Is this because the .30-06 is used for long distances where magnification is necessary?

I did find a .30-06 for sale now that advertises: "iron sights" - a Remington Model 700, 30-06, Stainless / Synthetic, includes Iron Sights for $700.00.

Is this a good "entry level" .30-06 rifle? Will I regret not shopping around for one with a scope? Does anyone just use iron or am I expected to "build"? I'm also concerned that I know very little about scopes and don't want to buy a piece of crap that turns out to be an old pop bottle painted to look like a scope. I also have no idea if a scope needs to be adjusted for aim apart from optical focus or how to do that.

I saw a package for a Savage Axis XP Rifle Package - .30-06 for $370.00, but the reviews I read complained that the scope was crappy and inaccurate.

It would be appreciated if anyone has some basic information or starter suggestions for me?

Thanks!! ...

The Remington 700 is one of the best all-around and relatively affordable rifles on the market. The aftermarket support is huge, and the quality is there. If you want to upgrade any parts, it'll be easy to find them.
The reason why many don't have iron sights is because most people scope 'em anyways. Not many people are shooting shorter ranges with a bolt-gun in 30-06, it's pretty overkill.
I do have a bolt-action CZ 452 with iron sights and it's a LOT of fun, but 30-06 is longer range for that. There are handier guns for shorter ranges like lever-action 30-30s.
The model you likely saw was the 700 BDL, which is beautiful.
Here is my 700 in 30-06

Thanks for the info. I see your point that a .30-06 with iron sights at closer ranges would be over-kill, and hence the value of a scope for the longer distance. Thanks - I'm learning.

Your rifle looks beautiful!! Love the wood and stainless steel! What model 700 is that and do you attach and detach the scope? - Is that common - to attach the scope when shooting and detach it when finished? Why wouldn't a shooter just pack it all away together (still attached) in a padded gun case?

Sorry about my lack of knowledge here, but that's why I joined here is to meet more experienced people and to learn.

Thanks!

99% of people will leave the scopes on the gun (i know i do). your best bet is to go to a gun shop and fondle a few for yourself and see what fits you best and what you like (and don't like). when i was deciding it was a toss-up between the 700 and tikka t3...i did settle on the tikka but out of personal preference (not because the remington is a bad gun) i just liked the tikka a little more. funny thing is a 700 in 7mm mag built in the 60's (with iron sights) did end up falling in my lap from a co-worker so i now own both.

just so you know, padded gun cases are not the best for long term storage. if your going to go this route make sure to oil the guns frequently because the foam and the enclosed case are magnets for making rust on metal parts (moisture gets trapped).

enjoy and welcome to this site and don't be afraid to ask questions...beware some users will get a bit snippy from time to time in their replies but try not to let it get to you (the search feature may be your friend also), and make sure to sign up for the equipment exchange if your interested in buying a few toy's (that's how i learnt quickly what i liked and didn't like...bought used, and if i didn't care for it i sold it for what i was into it for).

by the way, good choice on the 30-06.

Good info thank you. As I'm looking around now for a .30-06, someone also mentioned the Tikka t3 which I'm looking into as I just heard about that make a couple days ago (newbie).

Good info about the gun case moisture. I know Canadian Tire sells moisture-absorbing packets for gun cases and maybe those would be helpful? Is there a type of gun case - apart from the sponge - that would be better?

You're right about users that may be a bit grumpy. So far though users here have been pretty patient and supportive - even when I left a message with the question about the Remington 700 in the "Precision Forum" as I thought the Remington 700 was a precision firearm because of its scope!! I think I have a bit to learn here!

start looking at the costco safes...i chuckled when a co-worker suggested i get one for piece of mind. well...he was right, and now i'm looking at adding another (one for rifles and one for shotguns...heaven forbid i ever get bitten by the black rifle/military bug, and i think i'm close). at the vary least a stack-on cabinet to get you started (can always use it for ammo storage down the road if you decide this hobby...i mean addiction is for you) *you've been officially warned*

Pointandshoot - It's funny you mentioned "the addiction". When I got my PAL this past January 2013, I only wanted ONE gun - a Remington 870P. Well, I got it, then bought 6 more guns, and now another 3 more are on order, and again here looking at the .30-06 - all in the past 3 months! I remember my PAL instructor saying it would only be a matter of time until my whole house is full of guns! I might need a gun room rather than gun safe. I'll pass on the support group for the addiction though - talking about it will only trigger me to buy another gun!

I hope I don't get bitten by the military bug, although I did recently buy a Russian SKS, and I'm looking around now everywhere for a CZ 858 Canadian Edition. I wanted to look for an Enfield, but I became turned-off with the price of ammo (I think it was 303 British).

One thing I've noticed in the past few months is what appears to be a shortage of some guns with availability three or four months. I was surprised with this as I thought they would be easy to get. I seem to do a lot of waiting.

Pointandshoot - Is Maple Ridge by the Fraser in BC? Beautiful there ... I have ordered gun parts through "High Caliber Services Corp" in Mission BC.

Another thing to think about with the Remington 700 is weather you want an internal magazine with a hinged floorplate or a detachable magazine (DM). My personal preference is the DM and my 700 is like that but a lot of guys prefer the internal mag. I'll bet there are quite a few more internal mags that DM's. Check out both types.

Thank-you for the compliment. This model is a 700 Mountain Laminate Stainless Steel (Mountain LSS) and I think it's discontinued, sadly. It's more lightweight and tapered to carry easier in the woods for hunting.

I wouldn't detach the scope, because once you "sight it in" you leave it, generally. Taking it on and off would make it necessary to sight it back in again every time you want to shoot.

I love the 700, but I am not brand loyal so I would like to give you some alternative models to check out too to see which one fits you the best

Tikka T3
Winchester 70
Savage Hunter series
Browning A-bolt

They all handle and feel a bit different. Some guns have accuracy guarantees, some don't but are generally pretty accurate.
