So after 6 very slow busy months of putting stuff together when I could, my Remington 700 .308 build is ready for blasting! And thanks to a buddy, got some Krylon affection too! Nothing super fancy but I am very happy.

Specs:

Remington 700 SPS-V .308.
HS Precision 700P take-off stock, glass bedded by a friend at work.
Ken Farrell 20 MOA Base.
Badger Ordnance 30mm standard height rings.
Sightron SIII 3.5-10x44 LRMD/CM scope from Jerry at Mystic Precision, thanks!
Butler Creek scope caps.
Harris 6"-9" swivel type bi-pod.
Paint job is Krylon done by a friend of mine.

Will post updates when I get to the range again.

After the first few shots you won't even remember the 6 month wait.
When you get her out I'd like to know what you think of the scope. I have a 10-50 SIII, but I'm thinking about your scope on another gun.
 
I just went out tested SIII 8x32 and they sure are awesome.
I just put together savage mod 12 with HS precision and sure are fun rifle to plink long or short range.

I can't wait to go live with 'er. My trigger finger gets itchy just looking.

As for the scope, playing around with it before it was mounted, the glass looks fantastic. Also it's a great not too big not too small size. Hopefully it functions as good as my impressions of it so far.

I will be "building" one too over the next few weeks:

Rem 700 .308 AAC-SD
B&C Style 2 Medalist
Vortex Viper PST
TPS rings and rail
Harris 6-9 (non swivel for now)

Shortly after that I"ll have an adjustable but plate to increase length of pull and cant as well as a adjustable cheek riser.

Interested to see how your gun shoots!
 
That's the rifle I want, but in left hand. Did you do any conversions that would improve accuraccy out to the limits of rifle

What were you hoping to see?

He's replaced the plastic stock. That's the big one. Bedding would be a big improvement as well.

Following those, tailoring a load and that gun should be pretty damn accurate for the cost.

I just did my first 49 rounds last night. Stoked to shoot. Going to pick up a cheap box of bullets to foul barrel, then get into my pressure ladder shots, then onto my .2 gr interval rounds to compare groupings. 43-45. May not be hot enough, but I'll continue from 44-46 if my pressure looks good on the second outting. Then .1gr ladder on either side of selected charge.

The gun looks great. Reloading is a big step, but coats of paint, scope covers and and expensive stocks are little more than cosmetic improvements. The biggest step to maximizing its potential would be to put a match grade barrel on it, otherwise where it counts it is still just a $500 sporting rifle. just sayin.
 
My 700 build is progressing nicely.
700 short action, face trued, bolt lugs 90%+ contact. Lightweight firing pin unit.
Kreiger 6.5 - 8 medium Palma barrel, chambered in .260 Remington. Harrell brake.
Bedded with pillars into MilCun laminated stock.
PT&G detachable magazine trigger guard unit installed.
Adjustable buttplate and comb hardware yet to be installed.
Preliminary testing in HS slave stock indicates that it shoots. Cleanly sub-minute at 300m.
 
M700 builds are another addiction.... My latest one:

M700 SPS Tac in .22-250, yes, you read that right! I took a SPS Tac .223 barrel and had it reamed out to .22-250 since this SPS Tac .223 barrel comes in a 9" twist to shoot the 68 gr Hornady HPBT and/or the Sierra 69 gr MK boolits out to 800 meters. :D

Will be trying this baby on my winter crow and 'yote hunts once the snow lands here in Simcoe County, ON!! :dancingbanana:

I bought this HS Precision stock on the EE Forum. A great CGNutter sold it to me. Life is good! :) Currently this rifle likes the 50 gr Vmax boolit as well as the 68 gr Hornady HPBT match boolit! Gotta look up my records to see which loads are highly desirable. Last practice in the snow and falling light, this barrel puts them into an inch.... good enough for my groundhogs !!

Hey thanks for all the comments guys, have been busy and haven't checked the thread in a few days,

The stock has been switched out with the HS which also free floats the barrel, and has been glass bedded, other than that, not much. If I need to upgrade something in the future, I will, right now I just want to use it to blast hot metal downrange, as god intended :rockOn: .

The HS stock I actually got off a friend at work who wasn't using it, I have seen them come up on the EE but they are usually gone in 20 minutes.

Sweet!

I just got "done" mine.

Not bedded yet, but we'll see how it shoots first before I go ahead and do that.

Future mods may include a trigger and bolt knob, but once again, we'll see how it shoots. Hope to run it this weekend!
 
First Range Report:

So I took her out to the range Friday, great day for shooting, not too cold, no wind, and the sun was shining.

So myself and my friend got right into it and started the sight in/zeroing process from the prone at 100m using the bi-pod. He brought his XCR Tactical .330 Win. Mag. and we set up so we could spot for eachother. The ammo I was using all day was just plinker ammo, a bag with a mix of American Eage 150g FMJBT, Remington Core-Lokt 150g PSP and Core-Lokt 180g PSP.

Took a few bangs but I rang one off the target frame and was pretty easy from there to get on paper, from there I just milled in using the reticule which gave me surprisingly accurate adjustments. After that I set in on a circle I drew onto the target sheet for my first group, and well, it shoots pretty well IMHO.

The other holes were the XCR which he was basically just blasting at the paper because of some FTF problems, but that's another story.

So we shot for a while at the 100m at random different targets throughout the day, the rifle shot way better than I did and was pretty much dead on if I did my part. After that we took turns shooting at some old steel targets at 200m while standing behind a bench and using the bi-pod, rifle did great and using the mil-dots we hit fairly easily just using holdovers.

So breakdown of pros and cons:
PROS: Rifle shoots better than I do, flat out. 0 failiures to eject and 0 hard extractions in ~100 rounds fired. Action is smooth for the $ and gets even better after working it in a bit. The scope is excellent, the adjustments were dead on as far as I could tell, picture was clear as a bell and noticeably better than the Leupold my friend had, as a note though his is a less expensive scope. Granted that day I only shot out to 200 but the picture was perfect still at that range with no distortion or haze.

CONS: I had some issues with the floor hinge magazine double feeding, if anyone else has suggestions on how to fix it I would be much appreciative. Only other thing was that the trigger felt a tad-heavy but wasn't that big of an issue, and I can obviously get it tuned.

I got out yestserday with mixed results. I feel my 700 is working well, but figure it's my issue and gun set-up. My next mod is increasing length of pull.

Where abouts in Alberta are you from?
