Remington 700 7mm Rem Mag Build Advise

Hey there. I am new to this site and to shooting. I have been wanting to build a long range target and bench rifle. After a lot of research, I decided to go with with the Remington 700 chambered to the 7mm Rem Mag. So, I got a great deal on a plain jane 700 SPS which is exactly what I was looking for. I was wanting to customize it how I wanted and not buy something already done. I tend to buy parts all individually and upgrade slowly (and I am horrible with saving so will generally only buy parts that are <$1000 right now). For the next 2-3 years I am expecting to keep this rifle as mid-range precision shooter that can be built further into the high-end as I get better and more knowledgeable on precision shooting.

Here is a build list of what I was thinking of doing:

Stock/Chassis - I just ordered the MDT Tac21 along with the MDT Skeleton buttstock. I was really wanting to get this chassis, which was a big reason for getting the Rem700.

Optics - I cant really decide what I want to do here. I was leaning toward a Vortex Viper (http://www.cabelas.ca/product/59915/vortex-viper-riflescope-30mm) in mildot. I am looking to spend in the $500-$750 range for a scope and like the Vortex warranty. I figure if I want to get a better scope down the road, then one of my other guns would love the "hand-me-down"! I have been considering other options too, so any other suggestions in that price range would be great!

Barrel - Looking to upgrade to a heavy barrel. I have been looking at the Krieger barrels. I would love opinions on twist rates, lengths, grooves, and muzzle breaks!

So, ya, let me have your opinions and let me know of anything else I should look at right now for this build!

For best results have the action trued before the new barrel goes on. A 9 twist will handle the vast majority of bullets. 26 inches should be sufficient for good velocities.

You may find this 7mm page worth reading. The best place to start your project is with the range you want to shoot and the bullets of choice for that range. Once the bullets are chosen the rest of the stuff kind of follows.

Start with what you consider long range precision and the bullet you figure you want to shoot. After that buy yourself a benchmark barrel that will finish 26-28" in a 8.5 or 9 twist 5r. As far as brakes go the sky is the limit pick one that you like and have it installed. Get your action trued up this is a must. As far as optics go the old saying stands true buy once cry once so buy the best you can afford you'll thank yourself later. Make sure to budget for good reloading components after all if your gonna shoot precision long range it starts at the loading bench. Oh and put a 20moa rail on your action.

Doesnt the mdt tac21chassis have a 20moa rail built into it already? Definitely get the action trued up well your spending the money on a build. Krieger makes a nice barrel i have shot out a few of them in compitition. Number of lands is kinda up to you i would just stay away from a 3 groove other then that i have used 4,5,6 groove barrels havent really noticed a difference. 1-9 will shoot anything 180 and under. For the brake i would decide if your planning on shooting the rifle prone if so stay away from a radial brake use a gill brake instead. Dont forget a good trigger or have your factory one tuned up.

I suppose a brake would be better haha!

I will definitely be budgeting in getting the action trued when I get to replacing the barrel.

For the trigger, I will look at that once I start shooting it. It does have the adjustable trigger pull so I can play around with that at first.

The tac21 does have the 20moa rail so worries there.
