I just received my AICS AX 1.5 with a Remington 700 .308 action/barrel from Wolveines. Very nice product. I am curious what a custom bolt assembly could do with this build. I would prefer a heavier feel to he bolt, but need your opinions/experience/feedback.

if your barrel is already instaled, and you replace the bolt, you will have to get the headspace readjusted so I would burn this barrel first
but you can just get the handle threaded and fit an oversized handle

What do you mean by a heavier feel to the bolt? If you are referring to an oversized bolt handle, that is a common modification.

I have fired a couple of custom rifles that the bolt assembly was larger than average, had some form of block at the back of the bolt, and felt heavier and far smoother than stock actions. Perhaps I am simply not expressing this correctly, the custom action just felt, well, solid, the way a rifle should feel to me.

I can not justify the price of some of the cutom actions, upwards of $1600, based solely on feel, when the stock action works just fine. Are there any other reasons to use a custom action?

I shoot Fclass and Benchrest. The holy grail of competition shooting is a light smooth bolt lift function and closing. If you can use the back of your fingers to open the bolt well and good. The rifle is not jerked out of position and should remain nearly in position when the bolt is slid forward and closed and the rifle moves forward back into battery.

You are looking for the wrong thing.

This is fraking good advice. NormB will forget more than I will ever know about VERY Precise shooting at LRs. Even I learned something! :D
