A friend at work wants to build a Remington 700 on a MDT TAC21 Chassis.

We are wondering what the best route is for a barreled action/trigger.

Do you think it would be best to buy say an SPS tac in 223? Or have one built?

Not sure what an action, bolt, barrel, trigger would add up to in 223. Don't need anything crazy just a nice accurate action.

What do you think?

If you want a Remington barrelled action, the easiest way is to by a rifle, and sell the stock and any other bits you won't be using.
Often the factory barrel gets replaced.
Otherwise, you can buy a custom action and get a custom barrel installed. Results might be outstanding, but the cost is going to be substantially greater.

Option 1: Buy a Remy SPS and send it off to your smith to true action and install a nice custom bbl and trigger ( krieger and jewel come to mind ). Drop into the MDT upon its return.

Option 2: Buy a custom action that uses the 700 footprint ( like a Surgeon, Stiller, Defiance etc ) and then go from there.

Cost difference will be partyly recovered if you decide to sell down the road.

The obvious answer is to buy a Reminton as Tiriaq says, however I am a bit baffled at wanting to put a factory rifle in a very expensive (and excellent quality) specialty stock. It is not my dime and it is easy to offer criticism, but if creating a better gun, replace the parts that make the biggest difference, mainly the barrel. Therefore, to sum up my free opinion, buy the best you can afford. A Barnard P action or something in a remmy clone, and a good quality pipe. I know a coat of paint makes you THINK the car drives faster but... :)

You have to love what you have and feel good about it, so if the stock is what you want and can afford first, you can always drop a stock remmy gun and have fun, but to do it "right" you should use components equal in quaility to Lazlo's unreal stock! Either way, it will look amazing and blow the doors off the SPS stock.

Depending on how much all this build is going to cost for a build, take the time to research who you want to build for you and cost.

I am with Obtunded with this.

If you are willing to take your time, you can do what I did.

Take some time and spread your costs over time. Start with one part like the action and when you can afford it get the next part like the barrel, then the stock. Just keep in mind the hidden costs of parting out which is mainly the gunsmithing for barrel fitting, chambering, truing stock actions, etc.

otherwise the quick route that will be cheaper but sacrifice some accuracy, etc is to buy an SPS and sell the stock.

A compromise would be to buy the SPS and sell the Stock and barrel. Order yourself a good aftermarket tube like Krieger, Gaillard, McGowan, Shilen, Rock Creek, etc etc.

It is all up to you and how far you want your build to go.

Here is a thread chronicaling my build if you are interested in what I ended up doing over time.
