I have a older Model 700 in 30-06 in mint condition I would like to build into a custom hunting rifle.
Is this the correct forum to seek advise.
I would like to build into a 280 AI......true the action.....new barrel.....not sure of the stock.

Would appreciate help getting started.

How nice is the 30-06? If it is a really nice rifle, I would be hesitant to chop it up. Rather buy a donor action, or sell it and buy a fancy action to build on.

Why 280AI? Just curious, not very familiar with the round.

Sure, find a rifle builder either on here or the internet and contact them to see what there estimated build time is. Once you have a builder you can source the parts yourself or have them supply the parts? If your somewhat inexperienced you may want to get them to source the parts and offer advice, unless you have a specific build in mind?

The stock is usually the most expensive item and the longest wait, as most are manufactured in the US, the barrel is next etc.

Once you decide what you want you will have a better understanding on cost? and build time. Generally wait time for Manners or McMillan stocks is about 6 months.
We have some good barrel manufactures here as well, just contact a few to find something in your price range.

One final thought, when it comes to rifles it's "barrels, bullets & bedding" keep that in mind and you should do OK.
Good Luck.

Buy all the parts and a re build rifle and get a gunsmith to build it.
Finding the parts and rifle is the hard part.
I did this with a winchester model 70. Gunsmith cost was $500.00 At the time

like mildot said!
also you have to figure out what barrel contour you want sporter or heavy contour and among the stocks mildot mentioned you also have hs. precision that are of good quality and cheaper in price. also you can find more suppliers in Canada as well.

I am going through the process right now of a very similar build. Contact Gary Eakin at Big Horn Sales, you can source all the parts for your build from him and he can likely recommend a gunsmith in your area to put it all together for you.

It shouldn't be too hard to source what you need in Canada.

Barrel from Bighorn , IBI, Jury, KS Arms, or Mystic Precision. Bighorn and Mystic should have barrels in stock. IBI , Jury and KS arms make them.

As far as a stock goes Bighorn keeps some inventory of stocks so you may avoid a wait (my last mcmillian was almost a year wait). You can also take a look at wildcat stocks. Quality Canadian made product and lightweight.

For a gunsmith I'd ask Guntech first. He is highly regarded around here and I've had him do a few smaller jobs for me. Price was always more than fair and he's quick to turnaround a project. Terry from Black Art rifles has done a couple custom builds for me and he is top notch as well.
