Remington doesn't know anything about stripper clip usage ... the inquiries I made several years ago - Remington did not know a reason for the cut out... no one knows... it is a square cut out and does not 'fit' stripper clips...

I've got four older Remington 700 BDL's, including a 1963 in 7MM Rem Mag, (first year for both the BDL as well as the 7MM)
Probably my favourite bolt action rifle, deadly accurate and they feel "just right"!
I'd love to own a carbine version.
